Interim Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly held talks with Juan Mata in a bid to convince him to stay at the club.
Mata's contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season and he is currently able to discuss terms over a free transfer to foreign clubs.
The 30-year-old has been linked with a return to Spain in the summer, but Metro reports that Solskjaer is eager to keep him beyond the end of his current deal.
Mata's agent and father is due to meet with United this week in order to discuss terms, with the playmaker understood to be open to the idea of staying at the club.
The player has started three of Solskjaer's six games at the helm so far, but is yet to play a full 90 minutes under the interim boss.
The former Chelsea midfielder joined United in January 2014 and has gone on to score 44 goals in 207 appearances across all competitions.
