Former Manchester United midfielder Paddy Crerand has expressed his belief that Wayne Rooney is being wasted by England.
The United forward once more came in for criticism last night following England's 2-1 defeat to Italy in their World Cup opener, despite providing the assist for Daniel Sturridge's goal.
Rooney was deployed in a wide area for much of the second period, however, and Crerand has insisted that the 28-year-old needs to be played in his best position.
"Play Wayne behind the centre forward he's England's best player play him in his best position. Wayne wants to be involved all the time," Crerand tweeted.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has also claimed that Rooney is wasted in a wide area.
