England boss Roy Hodgson says that a petition created to ban Tom Cleverley from being included in the World Cup squad "doesn't impress" him.

Roy Hodgson has expressed his dismay with an online petition that was set up to prevent Tom Cleverley from being named in the England 2014 World Cup squad.

The petition, which was created by Glenn McConnell of Blackpool, says that the reputation of the Three Lions squad could be tarnished by the inclusion of the Manchester United midfielder.

It has attracted more than 7,000 signatures, but England boss Hodgson believes that the criticism of Cleverley is unfair.

"That petition doesn't impress me. Tom Cleverley has played some very good games for England, he's been a very useful member of our group," Hodgson is quoted as saying by The Mirror.

"I don't think it's correct that people should single out one player for Manchester United's lack of success this season.

"I'm not going to have the England team selected in the future by petitions from people holding it against one person."

Hodgson also feels that the 24-year-old is capable of ignoring the opinions of those who have signed the document.

"I'm disappointed that Tom, as a sensitive young man, has got to bear that burden, but I know he will come through it and when he does come through it and Manchester United start winning again, and he's starting to get praise for his performances, he'll be stronger for it," Hodgson added.

Cleverley has won 13 caps for the national side.
