Wayne Rooney says that landing the England captain's armband is "a great honour".

Wayne Rooney has expressed his pride at being selected as England captain for tomorrow's World Cup qualifier against San Marino.

The Manchester United striker described the opportunity as "a great honour" and urged his teammates to exercise caution against the Group H minnows.

"It's a great honour [to captain England]," talkSPORT quotes Rooney as saying. "I'm really proud and excited so hopefully it'll be a great result for us. I'm looking forward to the game. We've prepared well all week and we're ready to go.

"It's important that we focus on the game tomorrow. We're well aware of what can happen in football. You've seen lower league teams knocking big sides out of cup competitions. We need to stay focused but obviously we expect ourselves to win.

"We have to make sure we don't take them too lightly and relax during the game. We need to keep pushing and keep trying to score goals and hopefully we can get a few."

England go into Friday's fixture in third place in the group, level on points with Poland and the Ukraine, with a win and a draw from their opening games.
