Chris Smalling wants regular England place

Chris Smalling admits that Tuesday's crunch clash with Montenegro represents a chance to stake his claim for a regular England place.

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has declared that he is targeting a regular starting berth for England in central defence.

Smalling took advantage of uncertainty over Rio Ferdinand's international future to partner Joleon Lescott at the back in Friday's 8-0 win over San Marino.

With a sterner test to come in Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Montenegro, the 23-year-old has admitted that the game represents a huge chance to prove his international credentials.

He told Sky Sports News: "Am I conscious a position is up for grabs? Definitely. There were a few pull-outs for the San Marino game but it gives the people here an opportunity.

"I definitely see myself as having a chance with the more games I can get. If I can get on a little run, the position is more like your own. It's also great to have someone who has confidence in you, [Sir] Alex Ferguson at United and Roy Hodgson with England, and it gives you confidence. It gives me a bit of faith to go out there and just play the game."

"I take each chance that I can get and the bigger the game, the better for me. I'll be ready if I'm selected on Tuesday."

Injuries have restricted Smalling to 20 appearances for United so far this season.
