The French champions had a chance to level with just less than half an hour played, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic's low strike was pushed away by Geoffrey Jourdren.
The Swedish international had another chance at the start of the second half as he looked to fire in from a 30-yard free kick, but his dipping effort just missed the target.
The visitors got back on level terms in the 60th minute, when Maxwell smashed the ball in from close range following an Ibrahimovic header.
The goal lifted PSG, whose hopes of victory were boosted shortly after when Abdelhamid El Kaoutari was dismissed for his second yellow card of the game.
The champions had several chances against the 10-men of Montepellier, including an effort from new signing Edinson Cavani, but some desperate defending by the hosts prevented PSG from finding the winning goal.
