Sports Mole looks ahead to the international friendly between Netherlands and the USA in Amsterdam.

The Netherlands return to action following a two-month rest on Friday when they face the USA in an international friendly at the Amsterdam ArenA.

It is the first of two tricky tests for the USA ahead of their clash with world champions Germany next week.

Netherlands

The Dutch national team can extend their unbeaten run to four matches in all competitions on Friday when they host the USA.

Guus Hiddink's side have won two of their last three games, including a confidence-boosting 2-0 friendly triumph over Spain in their last outing on March 31.

However, their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign has been patchy so far, putting their chances of reaching next year's tournament in the balance. Two victories from their opening five games have left the Oranje in third place in the Group A standings, five points adrift of Iceland in second position.

They were fortunate to come away with a share of the spoils in their last qualifier as a stoppage-time goal from Wesley Sneijder earned them a 1-1 draw with Turkey.

Following their encounter with the USA, the Netherlands face a crucial trip to Latvia in Euro 2016 qualifying on June 12 - a match that they must not lose if they want to keep their qualification hopes alive.

One player who is likely to be the centre of attention if selected on Friday is forward Memphis Depay. The 21-year-old recently agreed to join Manchester United after helping PSV Eindhoven to the Eredivisie title. Dutch legend Marco van Basten has described the youngster as a "special talent", though two goals in 15 games suggests that he is yet to make his mark at international level.

USA

The USA play their first of two intriguing friendlies on Friday when they face the Dutch in Amsterdam. Jurgen Klinsmann's men will be back in action just five days later against world champions Germany in Cologne.

The Americans have been busy since their exploits at the 2014 World Cup, playing 10 friendlies over the course of nine months.

Their form has been inconsistent in that time, with three wins, three draws and four losses coming against the likes of Mexico, Switzerland, Denmark and Panama.

A 2-0 victory over Mexico came last time out as Jordan Morris and Juan Agudelo both got on the scoresheet in Texas.

Klinsmann will be hoping that his side's friendlies against the Dutch and Germany will stand his players in good stead ahead of next month's 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, a tournament that the USA have won five times.

"Playing against top teams like Germany and the Netherlands provides valuable experience, especially for the younger players here," the former striker told USsoccer.com. "More and more they must understand we come to meet these opponents eye to eye."

Having given such a good account of themselves at the World Cup, it would be a surprise if the Americans left Europe by the end of next week without at least one positive result to show for their efforts.

Team News

Guus Hiddink is expected to name a strong side for the match, with the likes of Memphis Depay, Robin van Persie and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar all likely to play some part.

However, Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost has been forced to withdraw from the squad due to a hamstring injury. A replacement has not been called up.

Jurgen Klinsmann has selected a blend of youth and experience in his squad for the matches against the Netherlands and Germany. Eight players have 10 caps or fewer, while nine have made over 20 appearances.

Jozy Altidore and Alejandro Bedoya are sidelined with hamstring and knee problems respectively. Clint Dempsey also misses out as he awaits the birth of his fourth child.

Netherlands possible starting lineup:
Vermeer; Janmaat, De Vrij, Martins Indi, Willems; Depay, Blind, Sneijder; Narsingh, Huntelaar, Lens

USA possible starting lineup:
Guzan; Yedlin, Alvarado, Brooks, Chandler; Beckerman; Diskerud, Bradley, Williams; Agudelo, Zardes

Head To Head

The two nations have played each other just twice before, with the USA failing to win on both occasions.

The Netherlands earned a 2-1 victory in a friendly back in 2010, while their first meeting ended in a 2-2 draw at the 2008 Olympics.

We say: Netherlands 2-1 USA

The USA will travel to Amsterdam confident that they can cause an upset against the Dutch, but the hosts will be eager to get a win under their belts ahead of their vital Euro 2016 qualifier against Latvia. While it could be a close match between two proud nations, the Netherlands' added quality in key positions is likely to see them over the line.
