Newcastle United are reportedly set to open formal talks with Steve McClaren this week.
The 54-year-old has been heavily linked with the head coach role at St James' Park and is now available after being sacked by Derby County on Monday.
The Magpies are expected to part company with current boss John Carver after narrowly securing their Premier League status over the weekend.
According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle sporting director Lee Charnley is expected to enter discussions with former England boss McClaren before the weekend.
McClaren has also previously managed Middlesbrough, FC Twente, Wolfsburg and Nottingham Forest.
