Newcastle United have failed in their bid to overturn the red card picked up by midfielder Vurnon Anita in the 2-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
The 27-year-old was sent off by referee Tim Robinson in the 87th minute at St James' Park for a late challenge on Wolves winger Ivan Cavaleiro.
Magpies manager Rafael Benitez confirmed on Monday that the club would contest the decision, but the Football Association has turned down their appeal and Anita will now serve a three-match ban.
A Newcastle statement read: "A claim of wrongful dismissal regarding Vurnon Anita has been unsuccessful, following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing.
"The Newcastle United player was dismissed for serious foul play during the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 17. The player's three-match suspension, therefore, remains in place."
Anita will miss Tuesday night's EFL Cup tie against Wolves at St James' Park as well as Championship fixtures against Aston Villa and Norwich City.
