Alan Pardew has said that securing Fabricio Coloccini's future at Newcastle United is a priority.
The Magpies completed the £9m transfer of Freiburg striker Papiss Cisse this week, and now Pardew is seeking a long-term deal for his Argentine skipper.
"The priority for me is Coloccini's new contract and one or two others," Pardew said.
"We are focused on that because we want to keep our best players.
"He is our captain and I want to keep him. Negotiations are due to restart shortly."
Coloccini signed for Newcastle from Deportivo La Coruna in 2008.
