French defender Florian Lejeune is reportedly on the brink of joining Newcastle United after undergoing a medical in the North-East on Monday afternoon.
The Magpies are understood to have agreed an £8.7m deal with Spanish side Eibar for the 26-year-old, making him their second signing of the summer.
Following drawn-out negotiations between the two clubs, former Manchester City centre-back Lejeune is expected to put pen to paper in the next 24 hours after completing his medical.
United have so far brought in just Christian Atsu ahead of their top-flight return, signing up the Ghana international from Chelsea for a sum of £6.2m following his spell on loan last term.
The lack of activity is said to have left boss Rafael Benitez considering his future at St James' Park, having already missed out on a few of his targets to rival sides.
