FIFA president Gianni Infantino proposes a radical overhaul of the Club World Cup, expanding the tournament to 32 teams and moving it to the summer.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has outlined plans to expand the Club World Cup to 32 teams and move the tournament from December to June.

The competition is currently held annually in December and brings together the six champions from six continental federations, as well as the champions from the host nation, in a straight knockout format.

Speaking to the Spanish press, Infantino criticised the current format for "attracting little enthusiasm" and suggested that a 20-day tournament in June with "32 of the world's best clubs" would be more appealing to fans.

"Today football is not just about Europe and South America, the world has changed and that's why we need to make the Club World Cup more interesting for teams, and also for fans around the world," he told Mundo Deportivo.

"That's what we're trying to do, by creating a tournament that is much more attractive, with more quality among participants and more clubs. That will attract more sponsors and television companies from around the world."

Barcelona are the current Club World Cup champions, having defeated Copa Libertadores winners River Plate 3-0 in last year's final.
