Bristol City moved out of the bottom three with a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Bristol City moved out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest at the City Ground this afternoon.

Neither side managed to construct a meaningful, goal-scoring opportunity in the first half, with Forest's Andy Reid coming closest when his shot was parried away by Dean Gerken in the City goal.

Despite the home side looking much the better team throughout the first period, it was the visitors who took the lead.

Lee Camp made a mess of collecting a cross and, in an effort to atone for his error, brought down Jon Stead in the box. Chris Wood stepped up and put the ball beyond Camp despite the Forest keeper getting a hand to it.

Forest looked for an immediate response and almost got it when Joel Lynch got on the end of a Reid free kick, only to be denied by a fine save from Gerken.

The hosts continued to ask all the questions and had a penalty appeal turned down when Dexter Blackstock fell under a challenge from Amougou.

Steve Cotterill's men very nearly equalised with two minutes left when substitute Marcus Tudgay almost made an immediate impact, only to be denied by Gerken.

City thought that they had completed a smash-and-grab victory when Woolford seemingly put them 2-0 up, only for the linesman to wrongly flag for offside.

It wasn't to matter in the end, however, as City stoutly defended their precious lead to move them out of the relegation zone, one point clear of Coventry, while Forest remain 20th, four points clear of the bottom three.
