Nottingham Forest taken to replay by Preston North End

Nottingham Forest and Preston North End will need a replay to decide who advances to the FA Cup fifth round after playing out a goalless draw at the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest will need a replay if they are to overcome Preston North End in the FA Cup fourth round after being held to a 0-0 draw at the City Ground.

Reds manager Billy Davies was up against his former side, who frustrated the Championship promotion hopefuls with an organised defensive display and then nearly snatched victory late on.

Forest's bright start proved to be a false dawn as early long-range efforts on goal from in-form winger Jamie Paterson and Simon Cox proved to be their best opportunities of the entire match.

Paterson, who scored a hat-trick in the third-round thrashing of West Ham United, fizzed a shot from distance narrowly wide of the post after cutting in from the wing, while Cox forced North End stopper Declan Rudd into a smart save with a powerful shot on the turn on nine minutes.

Jamie Mackie's shot over the crossbar on 38 minutes, following good work from Gonzalo Jara on the right, proved to be their last real sight of goal, but Preston were much more threatening after the break.

They tested Reds keeper Karl Darlow on six occasions, most notably through Paul Gallagher, Lee Holmes and substitute Iain Hume, who also saw a near-post header fly just over the crossbar.

Darlow remained in the action up until the last kick of the game when he saved from Josh Brownhill's set piece, as Simon Grayson's League One visitors earned a second chance to progress back at Deepdale.
