Sports Mole's brings you live coverage from day one of the men's football at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Sports Mole

Good morning and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage from day one of the men's football at the 2012 Olympic Games.

The women got us underway on Wednesday, and there were wins for Brazil, USA and Team GB on an exciting opening day of football.

Now our focus switches to the men, and we have all 16 Olympic teams in action on this record-breaking day in Great Britain.

Team GB will open up their campaign against Senegal at 8pm, while Spain face Japan and Brazil take on Egypt this afternoon.

Note that the live action begins at 12pm.

10.26That's just about me for this evening. Thanks for joining Sports Mole for the action. See you soon!

10.24The bronze medal match will take place on August 10. Meanwhile, the final of the men's tournament takes place on August 11.

10.22The two semi-finals will take place on August 7. The first pits the winner of QF2 against the winner of QF1. The second pits the winner of QF4 against the winner of QF3.

10.18The winner of Group D will face the runner-up in Group C in the first. The second sees the winner of Group B face the runner-up in Group A. The winner of Group C will face the runner-up in Group D in the third. Meanwhile, the winner of Group A will face the runner-up in Group B in the final quarter-final.

10.16Meanwhile, all four quarter-final matches will take place on August 4.

10.12The third round of group fixtures will take place on August 1 - with Team GB taking on Uruguay.

10.08Group A: Senegal vs. Uruguay, Team GB vs. UAE.

Group B: Mexico vs. Gabon, Korea vs. Switzerland.

Group C: Egypt vs. New Zealand, Brazil vs. Belarus.

Group D: Japan vs. Morocco, Spain vs. Honduras.

Fixtures to be played on July 29.

10.04Looking ahead to the rest of the tournament - and the next round of fixtures take place on Sunday.

10.02Meanwhile, Alan Hansen told the BBC: "A draw was a fair result. The big decision was the penalty not given on the challenge on Bellamy. It's astonishing the referee didn't pick up on it. It's assault! If they had got the penalty kick and scored it would have been game over. For the Senegal goal, Micah Richards commits the cardinal error of turning his back on the play. The goal had been coming."

10.00Here's a word from Mark Lawrenson following the result: "Senegal have deserved a draw but the non-penalty decision will wrankle Great Britain. It was a game changing decision."

9.58What have we learned from day one? Two of the three favourites - Uruguay and Brazil - recorded wins. However, Spain were undone by a first-half goal from Japan.

ResultsGroup A: UAE 1-2 Uruguay, Team GB 1-1 Senegal.

Group B: Mexico 0-0 Korea, Gabon 1-1 Switzerland.

Group C: Belarus 1-0 New Zealand, Brazil 3-2 Egypt.

Group D: Spain 0-1 Japan, Honduras 2-2 Morocco.

9.55So there we have it. What an opening day of men's football at the 2012 Olympics. Without question the shock of the afternoon came in Group D as Japan recorded a 1-0 win over Spain.

9.53Frustration for Team GB as they surrender a one-goal lead in the second period to draw 1-1 with Senegal in their opening match in Group A. Stuart Pearce's side might have had a penalty when Bellamy was felled in the box after the break, but no decision was given. The African outfit certainly dominated the second period - and they were well worth their point.

FULL-TIMETeam GB 1-1 Senegal

9.52One final attack for Team GB as Cleverley picks up possession in midfield.

9.50Another chance for Team GB as Ramsey searches out Sordell, but Ba clears the danger. Just two minutes remaining.

9.48Penalty shout for Team GB as Sordell goes down in the box, but no decision is forthcoming. Meanwhile, we will play four minutes of added time.

9.48Chance! So nearly for Senegal as Yero meets a cross in the box, but he heads wide.

9.46Chance! Wonderful opportunity for Team GB as Ramsey finds Sordell in the box, but he rattles the crossbar from close range.

9.46Change for Senegal as Kalidou Yero replaces Souare.

9.44Chance for Team GB as Giggs finds Richards in the box, however, his header is straight at Mane.

9.42Little over five minutes remaining at Old Trafford. We look to be heading for a 1-1 draw - which would be a brilliant result for Uruguay.

9.42You cannot say that it hasn't been coming. From a Team GB corner, they concede.

9.40Senegal level it at 1-1 and it's a wonderful goal from Konate as he produces a cool finish past Butland. Game on.

9.38GOAL! Team GB 1-1 Senegal (Konate)

9.38It's bright work from Ramsey as he digs out a cross, however, Ba clears it for a corner.

9.36Meanwhile, change for Team GB as Jack Cork replaces Bellamy with 10 minutes remaining.

9.36FULL-TIME: Brazil 3-2 Egypt: Brazil survive a second-half comeback from Egypt to record the victory with goals from Rafael, Damiao and Neymar.

9.36FULL-TIME: Belarus 1-0 New Zealand: Belarus open up their Group C campaign with a 1-0 win over the Kiwis courtesy of a strike from Baga just before the break.

9.34Positive play from Rose as he drives into the Senegal box, however, his cross is turned away by Ba.

9.32Half-chance for Senegal as Kouyate strikes from inside the box, however, Butland gathers the danger.

9.30That's a clear penalty for Team GB. Bellamy has been assaulted in the area by Ciss. Incredible that it has not been given.

9.30Penalty claim for Team GB as Bellamy clashes with Ciss in the area, however, no decision is given. Team GB are not happy here as both players get involved.

9.28The game is just starting to get a little stretched as Senegal search for the equaliser. That could open up holes at the back for Team GB.

9.26Update: Belarus 1-0 New Zealand, Brazil 3-2 Egypt. 84 minutes played.

9.24Half-chance for Team GB as Ramsey searches out Sordell, however, the Bolton Wanderers man is just offside.

9.24Another Senegal effort moves high and wide as Ba strikes from distance. Their shooting has been poor this evening.

9.22Meanwhile, change for Senegal as Magaye Gueye replaced Balde.

9.20Chance! First real chance of the second period for Team GB as Rose finds Bellamy in the box, but he just cannot convert.

9.18Meanwhile, change for Team GB as Aaron Ramsey replaces Allen - who appears to be injured.

9.18Update: GOAL! Brazil 3-2 Egypt (Mohamed Salah): Egypt put themselves back into the match as Salah converts with 76 minutes on the clock.

9.16Make no mistake, Senegal have had the better of this second period. But Team GB remain one-goal ahead.

9.16Update: Belarus 1-0 New Zealand, Brazil 3-1 Egypt. 75 minutes played.

9.14Chance! Another opportunity for Senegal as Ba meets a Souare corner, but Caulker heads it clear.

9.12Half-chance for Senegal as Souare strikes from distance, however, it was always moving high of the bar. Meanwhile, Butland palms a Toure effort behind for a corner.

9.10No rhythm to the game at the moment as both sides commit a series of fouls.

9.08Again it's ever so slow from both sides in the early stages of the second period. It has not been the quickest of matches thus far.

9.06It's a really poor challenge from Mane as he jumps in on Rose, however, no decision is forthcoming.

9.06Update: Belarus 1-0 New Zealand, Brazil 3-1 Egypt. 65 minutes played.

9.04Chance! Wonderful opportunity for Senegal as Balde strikes an effort inside the box, but Butland palms it to safety.

9.02Here we go then. Remember, Uruguay beat UAE 2-1 earlier today in Group A's other match.

9.00Change for Team GB at the break as Marvin Sordell replaces Sturridge.

9.00We are just moments away from the second period. Can Senegal respond?

8.58Meanwhile, here's more from Robbie Savage: "Stuart Pearce will be delighted with the impact the older players have had. Giggs and Bellamy have both influenced, as shown with the goal."

8.56Update: GOAL! Brazil 3-1 Egypt (Mohamed Aboutrika): Egypt cut the score to 3-1 after 52 minutes with a strike from Aboutrika.

8.54Meanwhile, here's more from Mark Lawrenson: "I think Senegal have looked better when they've had less players in the Great Britain half. They've moved the ball quicker and looked more dangerous. I think Great Britain are a work in progress but to pinch that goal has made a world of difference. They can't afford to sit back, otherwise Senegal will pour forward and GB could be caught."

8.52Both sides have had two shots on goal apiece. However, Team GB have had the only one that has mattered.

8.50Let's take a look at the statistics of the opening half. Team GB have enjoyed 61% of possession, however, they trail Senegal 7-2 in shots.

8.48Update: Belarus 1-0 New Zealand, Brazil 3-0 Egypt - both matches are underway in the second period.

8.46So there we have it. A singular strike from Craig Bellamy hands Team GB their first goal since 1960 and a 1-0 lead at the break. In truth, there have been few chances for either side - with the final ball lacking for both sides thus far.

HALF-TIMETeam GB 1-0 Senegal

8.44No real action as the half approaches its latter stages. In truth, it has not been a great opening half of football.

8.44Kouyate is some size. All 6ft 4inch of him. He has reportedly attracted the interest of a few Premier League clubs. Let's have a look at him then.

8.42Change for Senegal as Gueye is replaced by Cheikhou Kouyate.

8.40Chance! Wonderful vision from Giggs as he finds Sturridge with a long pass, however, the striker cannot find a finish.

8.38It's a nice combination between Giggs and Sturridge, however, the Chelsea man's touch isn't great and it drifts away.

8.38It's not a clever challenge from Souare as he jumps in on Neil Taylor and gets a yellow for his troubles. It's just getting a bit tasty.

8.36It's a floated cross from Giggs, however, Caulker fouls Balde in the box.

8.34Meanwhile, Team GB have a free-kick on the touchline with 34 minutes on the clock.

8.32HALF-TIME: Belarus 1-0 New Zealand: A cool finish from Baga on the stroke of the interval has handed Belarus a half-time lead against the Kiwis.

8.32HALF-TIME: Brazil 3-0 Egypt: Storming half from Brazil as goals from Rafael, Damiao and Neymar hand them a 3-0 lead at the break.

8.30Update: GOAL! Belarus 1-0 New Zealand (Dmitry Baga) Belarus take the lead in the final moments of the half against New Zealand.

8.30Mane looks a decent prospect for Senegal and he has been their main - and only - threat thus far.

8.28The match really has been played at a slow tempo this evening. However, Senegal storm into life as Mane advances into the box, but Richards just clears the danger.

8.26Team GB have been warned. Despite the goal, there has not been a great deal of quality on display thus far.

8.26Chance! It's a huge mistake from Butland as he presents the ball straight to Mane, but he just misses the target from inside the box.

8.24Brilliant defending from Team GB as Caulker and Richards deny Sadio Mane. 1-0 with 24 minutes on the clock.

8.22It's smart combination play between Rose and Sturridge, however, Senegal just manage to clear the danger before launching an attack of their own.

8.22Update: Belarus 0-0 New Zealand: No goals thus far with 38 minutes on the clock.

8.20That certainly raised the crowd! Although, Senegal are looking for an immediate response as they flood forward.

8.19Team GB lead and it's Bellamy who thumps the ball home from inside the box following a Giggs free-kick.

8.19GOAL! Team GB 1-0 Senegal (Bellamy)

8.17It's a brilliant ball from Giggs as he picks out Bellamy, and the Welshman gains a free-kick outside the box. Chance for Team GB here.

8.17Update: GOAL! Brazil 3-0 Egypt (Neymar): Neymar hands Brazil a three-goal lead with 30 minutes on the clock. Wow.

8.15The Mexican wave is the match's biggest entertainment at the moment. That says something! 0-0 with 15 minutes on the clock.

8.13Sighter for Team GB as Cleverley strikes from distance, however, Mane clears once more. The pace is just starting to pick up.

8.11Update: GOAL! Brazil 2-0 Egypt (Damiao): Leandro Damiao has given Brazil a 2-0 lead against Egypt after 26 minutes.

8.11Chance! Brilliant cross from Rose as he searches out Sturridge in the box, but Mane just collects the danger.

8.09Still no real goal threat from either side thus far. Although, Team GB are dominating possession of the ball.

8.09Update: Belarus 0-0 New Zealand: Chance for Belarus as Artem Solovei advances into the box, but he fires wide.

8.07Chance for Senegal as Moussa Konate whips a corner into the box, however, Micah Richards thumps a header clear.

8.07Team GB continue to dominate possession in the early stages, but Senegal are such a big powerful outfit. You would have to think that Team GB need to keep it simple - and on the ground.

8.05First sign of a meaningful attack for Team GB as Sturridge drives into the Senegal half, but it just breaks down. No real goal action in the opening moments.

8.03Team GB just beginning to enjoy a spell of possession with Allen and Cleverley exchanging touches in the midfield.

8.02Update: GOAL! Brazil 1-0 Egypt (Rafael): Rafael has given Brazil a 1-0 lead over Egypt with 16 minutes on the clock.

8.01Nice bright early start from Senegal as Sadio Mane drives into the Team GB half, however, he is just crowded out.

8.00Here we go then. Team GB's Olympic football campaign is officially underway.

7.58Now it's Team GB's turn. Not a great deal of passion in the singing truth be told!

7.57Here come the national anthems. Senegal are up first.

7.55The players are just emerging onto the pitch on this glorious night in Manchester.

7.53Update: Brazil 0-0 Egypt, Belarus 0-0 New Zealand. 8 minutes played.

7.51It is understood that they have run out of pies at Old Trafford. There is a joke in there somewhere I am sure.

7.49Old Trafford is just starting to fill up nicely. I don't think their will be a spare seat this evening. Just about 10 minutes to go.

7.47It is understood that Daniel Sturridge will play the lone role this evening, with support from Danny Rose and Craig Bellamy. It is so important that Team GB get men in-and-around the Chelsea man.

7.45Update: Brazil vs. Egypt and Belarus vs. New Zealand are both underway.

7.43Right, little over 15 minutes to go until the start of Team GB against Senegal. Is football coming home?

7.41We are just five minutes away from kickoff in the two 7.45pm kickoffs between Brazil and Egypt and Belarus and New Zealand.

7.39Meanwhile, here's a word from former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson on the BBC: "There is enough quality in the Team GB squad. Stuart Pearce has real ball-players in midfield and that is what will happen with the senior teams for England and Wales in the future. It's all about keeping the ball. The players who will start the match are all top Premier League stars. Everyone has bought into it, the crowd outside the ground is very family-orientated, and if the team can buy into it, who knows what can happen? We all remember Euro 96."

7.37Beckham should be in this squad. End of discussion. Period.

7.35No Gareth Bale this evening despite the fact that he recently scored in a pre-season friendly for Tottenham Hotspur. Work that one out! Meanwhile, the decision not to include David Beckham still has not sunk in yet.

7.33Meanwhile, Senegal enter tonight's match on the back of three straight wins against Oman, Spain and Switzerland. Not bad huh?

7.31Just a word on the Brazil lineup this evening. Lucas Moura, Alexandre Pato and Ganso are only good enough for a spot on the bench. Wow.

7.29It will also be a wonderful occasion for Ryan Giggs who will get his first taste of a major interntional tournament.

7.27Meanwhile, Team GB boss Stuart Pearce told the BBC: "The magnitude and exposure is bigger than anything I have experienced before [as a manager], and it's a fantastic opportunity to showcase our sport in the Olympics. I want my players to enjoy it and express themselves. I am really happy with my three over-23 players. Ryan Giggs has a great range of passing, and has the respect of all the players around him, Craig Bellamy is one of the best professionals I have ever worked with and I think Micah Richards will be a colossal at the back for me. He will get better as the tournament progresses."

7.25Here's a word from former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage on the BBC: "As an over-age player I'd have loved to have played at the Olympics. Wales could have four or five players playing tonight and, as a Welshman, I would have loved to have been playing."

7.23Meanwhile, Senegal boast West Ham United midfielder Mohamed Diame in their starting side.

7.21Right, let's have another look at the Team GB lineup. Jack Butland has been given the nod in goal, while Steven Caulker is preferred to James Tomkins in the middle of the defence.

7.19Meanwhile, we will keep you up-to-date with the two 7.45pm kickoff's between Egypt and Brazil and Belarus and New Zealand.

7.17Just a quick reminder of what we have coming up. Our main focus will be on Team GB vs. Senegal which will begin at 8pm.

7.15Brazil team vs. Egypt: Neto; Rafael, Thiago Silva, Juan, Marcelo, Sandro, Romulo, Oscar; Hulk, Neymar, Damiao

7.13Senegal team vs. Team GB: Mane; Ciss, Ba, Gueye, Toure; Mane, Diame, Gueye, Souare; Konate, Balde

7.11There we have it. Sturridge and Bellamy start in attack for Team GB, while Danny Rose keeps his spot in midfield.

7.09BREAKING: Team GB: Butland; Bertrand, Richards, Caulker, Taylor; Cleverley, Allen, Giggs, Rose; Sturridge, Bellamy

7.07Really smart showing from Gabon as they come from behind to register a point in Group B.

7.07FULL-TIME: Gabon 1-1 Switzerland

7.05We are entering the final moments between Gabon and Switzerland. It remains 1-1.

7.03Breaking team news: Ryan Nelsen captains New Zealand in their match against Belarus. Full team news to follow.

7.01Breaking team news: Rafael, Thiago Silva, Oscar, Neymar and Hulk all start for Brazil. Full team news will follow.

6.59Meanwhile, we still have the small matter of Brazil and Team GB in action this evening.

6.57Little over five minutes remaining between Gabon and Switzerland in Group B. All four teams in that particular group could be tied on one point by the end of the match.

6.55Update: Gabon 1-1 Switzerland: 10 minutes remaining, however, Switzerland have been reduced to 10 men as Oliver Buff is sent from the pitch.

6.53So there we have it. Uruguay come from behind to secure a 2-1 victory in their opening Group A encounter. It wasn't the best of displays from Oscar Tabarez's men, but they currently top the group.

FULL-TIMEUAE 1-2 Uruguay

6.52Uruguay keeping possession in the final moments. They have well and truly taken the sting out of this one.

6.50Update: Gabon 1-1 Switzerland: Still level with just about 15 minutes remaining.

6.50Or will it? We will play an additional four minutes of added time.

6.48Half-chance for UAE as Hussian finds Al Hammadi in the box, however, he just fires it wide. That will be just about it.

6.48Little over two minutes of time remaining at Old Trafford. Uruguay look to be heading for three points here.

6.46However, the referee just awards a free-kick to the blues.

6.46Both sets of players get involved as Al-Kamali fells Lodeiro in the middle of the pirch. Uruguay are not happy with that challenge.

6.44However, Khalil's effort is far too high and wide. That's really poor.

6.42Can UAE force an equaliser in the latter stages? They have a free-kick just about 40 yards from goal.

6.40Indeed he does came off as Jonathan Urretaviscaya takes his place.

6.39Half-chance for Suarez as he drives into the box, but he fires it straight at Khaseif. Meanwhile, Ramirez does not look like he will be able to continue as he hobbles around.

6.37Chance! Khalil so nearly levels it for UAE as he advances into the box, but he fires just wide.

6.35Again it's poor from Suarez as he loses possession in an advanced area. The Liverpool man hasn't been great this evening.

6.33Thumping strike from Rodriguez as he hits it from all of 35 yards, but it was always too high. Little over 15 minutes remaining at Old Trafford.

6.31Meanwhile, change for UAE as Ahmed Ali replaces Rashed Eisa.

6.31Update: Gabon 1-1 Switzerland: Still it remains level with the hour mark approaching.

6.29UAE have just began to put a spell of pressure together with Hammadi and Eisa involved, but it just isn't quite happening in the final third.

6.27It's extremely ambitious from UAE as Abdulrahman strikes from distance. Meanwhile, change for Uruguay as Calzada is replaced by Diego Rodriguez.

6.25It doesn't look good for Arias as he is clattered by Esmaeel. However, it appears that he will return.

6.23Decent spell of possession for UAE as Risa and Esmaeel combine. However, it just fades away at the final moment.

6.21Little under 30 minutes remaining at Old Trafford - and it's all Uruguay at the moment.

6.19Update: Gabon 1-1 Switzerland: The match is underway in the second period.

6.17Change for UAE as Ismail Al Hammadi replaces Matar. Can they get back into this one?

6.17Chance! So nearly 3-1 to Uruguay as Cavani advances into the area, but Ahmad just clears the danger.

6.15You cannot say that it hasn't been coming. It's been all Uruguay in the second period.

6.14I said it needed to be better - and it was. Excellent strike from Lodeiro as he fires it into the far corner. Brilliant.

6.14GOAL! UAE 1-2 Uruguay (Lodeiro)

6.10It's poor from Lodeiro as he fires a powerful pass into Cavani. It's got to be better than that. Although it's all Uruguay at the moment.

6.08It's really nice feet from Lodeiro as he emerges into the UAE half, however, his final ball to Cavani is just too short.

6.06Four members of Uruguay's World Cup squad are on display this evening. However, we remain level at 1-1 with 50 minutes on the clock.

6.04Much better purpose from Uruguay at the off with Suarez and Cavani both involved.

6.02Meanwhile, change for Uruguay at the break with Aguirregaray replaced by Nicolas Lodeiro.

6.02HALF-TIME: Gabon 1-1 Switzerland: The two Group B rivals remain level at 1-1 at the interval.

6.00Update: Gabon 1-1 Switzerland: Gabon equalise on the stroke of the interval with a cool finish from Pierre Aubameyang.

5.59Old Trafford is just starting to fill up nicely for the second period - which will get underway shortly.

5.57Update: Gabon 0-1 Switzerland: Gabon have missed a host of chances to level the match late in the first half with Jerry Obiang and Levy Madina guilty of missing the target.

5.55We haven't seen much from Suarez or Cavani in the opening half. However, you would have to favour Uruguay in the second period.

5.53Let's look at the statistics from the opening half of football. UAE have just shaded possession with 54%, while they have had six shots to Uruguay's three.

5.51Remember, we still have three games to come this evening. Belarus vs. New Zealand, Egypt vs. Brazil and Team GB vs. Senegal.

5.49Update: Gabon 0-1 Switzerland: Nothing much to report with 33 minutes on the clock.

5.47It's harsh on UAE who dominated proceedings in the opening half, however, a fine free-kick from Ramirez - five minutes before the break - has left it level at 1-1.

HALF-TIMEUAE 1-1 Uruguay

5.46Suddenly it's all Uruguay as they pass and probe around the UAE box. We will play one added minute at the end of the half.

5.44It's tough on UAE who have dominated the opening half, but that's how quickly football can change.

5.42Wonderful! Stunning free-kick from Ramirez as he bends it into the top corner. Just brilliant.

5.42GOAL! UAE 1-1 Uruguay (Ramirez)

5.42Another free-kick for Uruguay as Suarez is felled outside the box. Ramirez to take.

5.40Chance! So nearly 2-0 to UAE as Matar meets an Esmaeel cross, but it's just high of the bar.

5.38Meanwhile, chance for Uruguay as Cavani lines up a free-kick, but it is just high of the bar.

5.38Update: Gabon 0-1 Switzerland: Gabon so nearly equalise as Jerry Obiang hits the post. 23 minutes gone in that one.

5.36Uruguay are not really working together at the moment. It's all ever so bitty with the midfield too far behind the front pair. UAE look like world beaters.

5.34Uruguay have the ball in the net, however, it's not given as Suarez just pushes Ali Khaseif. 33 minutes gone here at Old Trafford.

5.32Update: Gabon 0-1 Switzerland: The Swiss still lead with that 5th minute penalty from Mehmedi.

5.30It's a waste from UAE as Hamdan Al-Kamali plays it straight out of play, but they are on fire here as Eisa tests the palms of Campana once more.

5.28We haven't seen much from Suarez or Cavani thus far. Just as UAE would have hoped.

5.26Chance! So nearly 2-0 to UAE as Matar gets in once more, but this time Campana makes the save.

5.25Who saw that coming? I was about to say that it has hardly been a classic thus far. That will perk it up!

5.23Wow! Wonderful scenes here as Ismaeil Matar rounds Campana before slipping the ball home. UAE lead.

5.23GOAL! UAE 1-0 Uruguay (Matar)

5.21Update: Gabon 0-1 Switzerland: Switzerland have taken an early lead against Gabon courtesy of a penalty from Admir Mehmedi.

5.19UAE stopped Australia qualifying for this year's tournament - and they look a decent side from their showing thus far.

5.17Gabon vs. Switzerland is underway.

5.17Chance! So nearly for Uruguay as Arias searches out Cavani in the box, but the Napoli man just fails to make contact.

5.15Again another Uruguay attack breaks down as Gaston Ramirez wastes possession. Meanwhile, Hussain catches Coates late with a high challenge.

5.13Again it's really nice work from UAE with Rashed Eisa and Khamis Esmaeel involved, but Martin Campana is on hand to collect the danger.

5.11Penalty claim for UAE as Omae Abdulrahman is felled in the box, however, the referee waves play on.

5.09Still no real clear-cut chances for either side thus far. Although, UAE have made a bright start to proceedings.

5.07Just a reminder that another match will soon get underway with Gabon facing Switzerland in Group B.

5.05Chance! Opportunity for UAE as Ahmed Khalil finds Ismaeil Matar in the box, however, he just heads wide.

5.03Boos ring out as Suarez picks up the ball, as expected at Old Trafford!

5.03Nice bright early start from Uruguay with Suarez and Cavani both enjoying possession of the ball.

5.01Thanks Danni! Here we go then. UAE vs. Uruguay is underway.

4.59They're about to get underway so I will switch you back to the wonderful Matt Law, who will take you through the 90 minutes. Enjoy!

4.57I suspect some eyes will be on Uruguay's Edinson Cavani, who is among transfer speculation this summer. Chelsea being one club linked to the player.

4.56Time for the national anthems! Then we can get going. How do you see this one turning out?

4.54Liverpool striker Luis Suarez dons the captain's armband and leads out his team on Manchester United's home turf. This is the first time the frontman has been at United's ground since the infamous handshake that wasn't...

4.54Back to the here and now! Uruguay and the United Arab Emirates have walked onto the pitch for their clash at Old Trafford.

4.53So much for tiki taka! Ok, perhaps that's a bit too early to say but a great result for the Japanese, who headed into the clash as the underdogs.

4.51The surprise result today was arguably Japan's 1-0 win over Spain this afternoon.

4.50Honduras kicked off the Men's tournament with a 2-2 draw against Morocco, while Mexico were held in a goalless 90 minutes by South Korea.

4.46As we wait for the next two matches, let's have a quick recap on what we've already seen today.

4.45Although the one we're all waiting for is Team GB's first competitive contest at London 2012 is against Senegal at Old Trafford at 8pm...in case you didn't already know.

4.44Just to remind you that Belarus against New Zealand and Brazil's clash with Egypt get underway at 7.45pm.

4.42Next up at 5pm, the United Arab Emirates kick off their campaign against Uruguay, while Gabon take on Switzerland just 15 minutes later.

4.41Hello all! I hope you're enjoying today's Olympics football coverage. Don't forget we have five more matches for you coming up!

4.38Right, that's me for the moment. I shall hand you over to the impressive Danielle Joynson for the next 20 minutes or so. Stay with us!

4.38So there we have it. What a wonderful story at the 2012 Olympics as Japan secure a 1-0 Group D victory over Spain. It was by no means a fluke result with their impressive work-rate overcoming a lacklustre Spanish outfit. Wonderful scenes.

FULL-TIMESpain 0-1 Japan

4.37Spain continue to push, but it looks to be over. One final attack.

4.36Meanwhile, we have three minutes of additional time remaining.

4.34Chance! Another glorious opportunity for Japan as Yamaguchi meets the ball in the box, but he fires it over. Incredible.

4.34Here we go then. Little over one minute of normal time remaining. Can Spain force an equaliser? Or are we heading for one of the biggest shocks in recent years?

4.32Chance! Another fine chance for Japan as Nagai advances on goal, but it's a brilliant save from De Gea. He has been fantastic.

4.30Another change for Japan as Kazuya Yamamura replaces Ohgihara. Can they hold in the final five minutes?

4.28So much invention about Japan as they continue to create chances. They have just been so impressive this afternoon.

4.26Chance for Spain as Mata lines up a free-kick, however, it's high and wide of the post.

4.26Another change for Spain as Koke is replaced by Tello. Can the Barcelona man inspire his team?

4.24Chance! So nearly an equaliser for Spain as Mata strikes from inside the box, but Gonda pushes it clear.

4.22FULL-TIME: Mexico 0-0 Korea: So there we have it. The two Group B rivals share the points at St James' Park.

4.20Another Spanish attack breaks down as Mata plays it straight out of play. Meanwhile, Giovani Dos Santos has missed a golden chance to win it late on for Mexico against Korea.

4.18Change for Japan as Sakai is replaced by his namesake Gotoku.

4.18Japan continue to attack with Nagai and Kiyotake involved, however, Spain just clear the danger.

4.16Update: Mexico 0-0 Korea: Not a classic by any means as we enter the final moments at 0-0.

4.14This match should be done and dusted with the chances Japan have had in this second period. But it isn't. And you just get the feeling that Spain will grab one.

4.12Still just the singluar strike on goal for Spain in this match, while Japan have had three. They have also managed three times as many shots off-target.

4.10Spain just beginning to get on the ball as the match approaches its latter stages. However, it remains Spain 0-1 Japan.

4.08Half-chance for Spain as Herrera strikes a low cross into the box, however, Sakai is on hand to clear the danger.

4.08Update: Mexico 0-0 Korea: Still nothing at St James' Park with little over 10 minutes remaining.

4.06Another change for Spain as Oriol Romeu replaces Isco. Spain have just under 30 minutes to save this one.

4.04Japan need another, will they come to regret those two missed chances? Incredible scenes here.

4.02Chance! Oh my word! Kiyotake dances through the Spanish defence but again just fires wide. What is happening to Spain?

4.00Chance! Wonderful opening for Japan as Nagai advances into the box, but his strike is an inch wide. Wow. That was the game right there.

4.00Long-range strike from Kiyotake just moves past the post. Japan look the most likely at the moment.

3.58Change for Spain as Herrera replaces Lopez. The Spaniard's have 35 minutes to rescue this one.

3.56Have the two teams switched shirts at the break? Japan are knocking the ball around with such confidence. No response from Spain thus far.

3.54Update: Mexico 0-0 Korea: Still no score in that one with 65 minutes on the clock.

3.52Chance! So nearly 2-0 to Japan as Higashi shapes an effort into the top corner, however, De Gea pushes the ball to safety.

3.50Not the response we expected from Spain in the second period with Japan currently enjoying possession of the ball. However, can they hang on for another 40 minutes or so?

3.48Change for Japan at the break with Manabu Saito replacing Otsu.

3.46Time to return to Spain vs. Japan with the second period just getting underway.

3.44Chance for Aqunio as he drives into the box, however, it just goes wide of the post. 30 minutes remaining at St James' Park.

3.42Completely different approach from South Korea in the second period, they are keeping it much narrower in the middle of the park.

3.40It's Mexico who are dominating the early stages of possession. However, they have been poor in this one thus far.

3.38Meanwhile, Mexico and Korea are underway in the second period.

3.36Just the singular shot for Spain on target despite having 67% possession, while Japan have registered two strikes on goal.

3.34Come on then... who had Japan to be winning 1-0 at the break? Anyone? Nope, me neither.

3.32Latest scores: Mexico 0-0 Korea, Spain 0-1 Japan.

3.30What a story we have developing at Hampden Park. Spain started the match with their usual spell of possession, but Japan's work-rate improved as the half developed. They took the lead with a close-range finish from Otsu after 34 minutes, before Inigo Martinez was dismissed for Spain for a last-man foul on Nagai. Incredible.

HALF-TIMESpain 0-1 Japan

3.28However, Ohgihara fires the free-kick over the crossbar.

3.28Martinez is given his marching orders for a last-man foul on Nagai. Wow. It's all gone terribly wrong for Spain.

3.28Red card: Inigo Martinez is dismissed for Spain!

3.26Booking for Alba five minutes before the break. Clear sign of frustration from the Spanish.

3.24Chance! So nearly 2-0 to Japan as Kiyotake rounds the goalkeeeper, but he just fires wide of the post. Terrible defending from Spain.

3.22One thing is for certain, Spain will not panic. They continue to pass and probe as the half approaches its latter stages.

3.20Anyone see that coming? That has certainly perked the fans up! His legs buckled like spaghetti in the area, but he just managed to turn it home.

3.19Wow! Japan take the lead and it's Yuki Otsu who turns a corner in from close range.

3.19GOAL! Spain 0-1 Japan (Otsu)

3.17HALF-TIME: Mexico 0-0 Korea: Not the best 45 minutes you will see. Just the one shot on target between the two sides tells its own story.

3.1730 minutes played and just the singular shot on target from Spain. You heard it here first! Meanwhile, Japan have also registered one effort on target.

3.15Brilliant break from Japan once more as Nagai drives into the Spanish box, however, Alba comes across to clear the danger. Japan really do have some frightening pace on the break.

3.13It's smart work from Japan as Nagai searches out Yamaguchi in the box, but Javi Martinex is on hand to clear the danger.

3.11Chance for Spain as Mata strikes from distance, however, Gonda pushes the ball wide of the post. Better from Spain.

3.09Japan will be pretty happy with the opening 23 minutes of football. But as we know so well, it can all change in a flash.

3.07Another long period of patient possession from the Spanish. Japan have 10 players behind the ball at the moment - as expected.

3.05It's lovely feet from Keigo Higashi around the Spanish box, but he is just crowded out at the final moment. No real chances for either side thus far.

3.03Again the final pass from Spain is just too strong. Famous last words I am sure!

3.03Yuki Otsu looks the pick of the players for Japan thus far. He has just begun to cause Martin Montoya some problems.

3.01Update: Mexico 0-0 Korea: Nothing much to report from that one. Although Korea have enjoyed the best of the chances. 30 minutes on the clock.

2.59Spain just haven't quite found that final pass thus far. Although they are simply dominating possession of the ball.

2.57Again it's bright work from Mata as the Chelsea man feeds Isco, however, Sakai clears the danger.

2.57It's too long for Isco as Alvaro Dominguez thumps a 50 yard pass across the pitch. Chance for Japan to take a breather.

2.55It's a lovely measured ball from Mata as he searches out Adrian Lopez, however, Daisuke Suzuki clears the danger in the box.

2.53So important that the likes of Takahiro Ohgihara and Keigo Higashi get among the Spanish midfield this afternoon. They just have not had the bull thus far.

2.52Chance! Opening for Spain as Rodrigo collects on the edge of the box, however, his effort is just wide of the post.

2.50Still it's pass, pass, pass from the Spanish with Isco, Koke and Martinez all involved. Japan seem fed up already!

2.50Update: Mexico 0-0 Korea: Still no real chances for either side with 17 minutes on the clock.

2.48First shot of the afternoon comes to Japan in the shape of Kensuke Nagai, however, De Gea is on hand to collect the danger.

2.46Short sharp passing from the Spanish in the early stages, as expected. It is no fluke that they are so good at every level.

2.45Here we go then. Japan get us underway.

2.45Meanwhile, no Shinji Kagawa for Japan in a largely unknown outfit. Although four of their starting 11 play in one of the top four European leagues.

2.44As mentioned, the likes of Martinez, Alba and Mata are on display for Spain this afternoon. Not bad huh?

2.42We join the action just as the national anthems are in progress. Very intense from the Japanese.

2.42Right, that's where we leave this one. Our main focus will switch to Spain and Japan fo the next 90 minutes of football.

2.40Decent spell of possession for Mexico as they pass and probe around the South Korean box. However, their final ball has been lacking thus far.

2.38First real attack for Mexico as Javier Aquino drives into the box, but his ball is just too long and drifts behind.

2.36It's the South Korean fans generating the atmosphere in the early stages - and their team has started the stronger.

2.34It's a searching ball from Suk-young Yun, however, it just drifts away from Park. Still no real action to report.

2.34Nice bright early start from Korea as they enjoy possession of the ball. No real chances of note thus far.

2.32Meanwhile, the team news for Spain vs. Japan can be found here.

2.32We will be switching our main focus to Spain vs. Japan in round about 15 minutes time. However, as promised, we will cover the main action from both.

2.30Mexico vs. Korea is underway.

2.28So here we go then. Latin America vs. East Asia.

2.26Some very questionable singing from the Mexican's during their national anthem. Very passionate nonetheless!

2.24We will have two matches soon in progress. Mexico vs. Korea and Spain vs. Japan. Have no fear - we will be covering both.

2.22Iker Muniain misses out for Spain, while Ander Herrera and Cristian Tello start the match on the bench.

2.20We will bring you the full team news for that match in the minutes ahead.

2.18Breaking team news: David de Gea, Javi Martinez, Jordi Alba, Juan Mata all start for Spain.

2.16Meanwhile, Spain and Japan will get underway in Group D at 2.45pm.

2.14Full team news for the match can be found here.

2.12Arsenal striker Chu-young Park will lead Korea's fight this afternoon. Although it remains to be seen whether he will be given the support he needs.

2.10However, the Mexican's will be without Javier Hernandez, Carlos Vela and Jonathan Dos Santos this summer. Three of their biggest stars.

2.08Mexico dominated their Olympic qualification group to advance to the tournament. Meanwhile, Korea's defence saw them through the Asian draw.

2.06Mexico are the heavy favourites to top Group D - while they have a favourable run to the latter stages. Meanwhile, South Korea are very much the underdogs.

2.04We are just about 25 minutes from kickoff between Mexico and Korea. Plenty of pace on display. We will bring you the full team news in a moment.

2.02If you have just joined us, a quick reminder that Brazil, Spain and Team GB are all in action later today. Just the one match has been completed thus far - with Honduras and Morocco sharing the points in a 2-2 draw.

2.00Confirmed team news: Dos Santos misses out for Mexico, but Carlos Salcido starts in defence.

1.58The other pair in Group B, Gabon and Switzerland, will face off at 5.15pm. Therefore, the victor from Mexico and Japan will be confident of topping the group.

1.56Not a bad start huh? Let's hope the rest of the day's action lives up to it. Meanwhile, there are early suggestions that Giovani Dos Santos has not made Mexico's starting lineup. Big surprise if so!

1.54Phew, there's the opening match in Group D done and dusted. Next up, Mexico and Korea face in Group B.

1.52On the balance of play, it would be hard to argue that either side deserved to lose the match. Although, Honduras did just about shade it.

1.50So there we have it. We are treated to four goals, a penalty and a red card as Honduras and Morocco draw 2-2 in the opening match of the men's football.

FULL-TIMEHonduras 2-2 Morocco

1.48Honduras just enjoying possession of the ball in the final stages of the match. The real winners in this one will be Spain and Japan.

1.46We will play an additional five minutes at the end of the match.

1.44Double change for Morocco late on as Ivad Najah and Omar El Kaddouri replace Barrada and Amrabat.

1.44Change for Honduras as Orlin Peralta replaces Martinez. The game has just settled down in terms of chances with both sides enjoying spells of possession. It looks likely that the sides will have to settle for a point apiece.

1.42Chance! So nearly a winner for Morocco as Jebbour advances into the box, but he can only find the side netting.

1.42Honduras continue to look the most likely as we approach the latter stages. Will there be a winner in the final five minutes?

1.40Another long-range effort for Honduras as Martinez releases a strike. However, it moves high and wide.

1.38Thumping effort from Fettouhi, but it moves high and wide of the bar. Little under 10 minutes remaining and we remain tied at 2-2.

1.36Change for Honduras as two-goal Bengtson is replaced by Antony Lozano.

1.34Again it's really smart work from Espinoza as he collects possession before driving into the Moroccan half. He has been really impressive this afteroon.

1.32Brilliant work from Honduras as Martinez finds Najar on the left, however, the danger is cleared. Meanwhile, change for Morocco as Abdelatif Noussir replaces Bidaoui.

1.30Both players had a little nibble at the other, but it is Bergdich who is sent from the pitch. Morocco will play the remaining 15 minutes or so with 10 men.

1.28Red card! Moroccan defender Zakarya Bergdich is dismissed from play after kicking Martinez.

1.26There isn't really a great deal of team shape on display here. Just attack, attack, attack. Great for us, but I am not sure their managers will agree.

1.24Good grief. What on earth did both managers say to their players at the interval? Fantastic entertainment.

1.22Fantastic goal from Labyad as he produces a wonderful chip into the top corner. Game on!

1.22GOAL! Honduras 2-2 Morocco (Labyad)

1.22Oh my word. What an opening match we have had here - and there are still 25 minutes remaining. All of a sudden Honduras have found another gear.

1.20Bengtson wins the fight for the penalty and slots it past Amsif. What a turnaround!

1.20GOAL! Honduras 2-1 Morocco (Bengtson)

1.18The referee points to the spot as Jebbour brings Bengston down in the area. Figueroa to take...

1.18PENALTY TO HONDURAS

1.18Chance! Another opportunity for Honduras as Figueroa meets a corner with a thumping volley. However, it drifts high and wide.

1.16Goals certainly change games, and suddenly Honduras have a spring in their step. We sit at 1-1 with 30 minutes remaining.

1.14Meanwhile, here comes Hernandez as the striker replaces Lopez.

1.12Honduras are back on level terms as Bengston sticks out a leg to turn a Figueroa cross into the back of the net.

1.12GOAL! Honduras 1-1 Morocco (Bengston)

1.12It's a poor challenge from Soufiane Bidaoui as he brings down Figueroa. The Moroccan is given a yellow for his troubles. Meanwhile, still no real attacking threat from Honduras.

1.10Will we see Eddie Hernandez for Honduras in the second period? It was certainly a surprise that he didn't start the match.

1.08Again it's really smart work from Amrabat as he drives into the Honduran box. However, he is crowded out at the final moment.

1.06Amrabat has been Morocco's stand-out player for me thus far. The striker has used the ball intelligently in attack.

1.06Espinoza continues to have a say for Honduras as they dominate possession, but chances remain few and far between.

1.04Another sighter for Honduras as Najar strikes from distance, however, Amsif clears the danger.

1.04Nice bright start from Luis Suarez's side as Espinoza wins a corner. However, a red shirt clears the danger.

1.02Here we go then. We are underway in the second period. Can Honduras respond?

1.00Remember, we still have another nine hours of football Olympic action today. Stay with us and you will not miss a kick.

12.58Neither of these two sides will fancy their chances against Spain. So three points are so vital this afternoon.

12.56Both sides have had two shots on goal. But in truth, Honduras just haven't really threatened to register a goal.

12.54Let's take a look at some statistics for the opening half. Honduras have had 65% of possession, while they have had seven shots to Morocco's four.

12.52Our second match, due for a 2.30pm start, pits Mexico against Korea. Undoubtedly the player to watch will be Mexico's Tottenham Hotspur striker Giovani dos Santos. Meanwhile, Korea are very much considered as outsiders for the competition.

12.50Remember, we still have the likes of Spain, Brazil and Team GB to come on day one. Will any of those three be worried by the two currently on display? I shouldn't think so.

12.48So there we have it. Morocco enter the break 1-0 ahead courtesy of a fine strike from Barrada after 39 minutes. It was Honduras who started the better. However, they remain behind at the break.

HALF-TIMEHonduras 0-1 Morocco

12.46Real end-to-end stuff in the final moments of the opening period.

12.44Labyad is causing all sorts of problems for Honduras in the latter stages of the half. He looks a real livewire.

12.42Wow. What an end to the half! Brilliant entertainment here at Hampden. Can Morocco hold on in the latter stages of the half?

12.40Chance! Best opening of the match for Honduras as Najar meets the ball in the box, but somehow he fires over from close range.

12.38Morocco lead, and it's Barrada with a fine strike after Labyad had found the midfielder in the box. Wonderful.

12.38GOAL! Honduras 0-1 Morocco (Barrada)

12.37Another long-range effort from Martinez, however, Amsif is on hand to collect the danger. We remain at 0-0 with 37 minutes on the clock.

12.35Just half a penalty shout for Honduras as Martinez stumbles in the Moroccan box. However, no decision is forthcoming.

12.33Chance! It's another fine opportunity for Morocco as Houssine Kharja heads from close range, but Mendoza pushes the ball to safety.

12.31Good opportunity for Honduras as they gain a free kick just outside the box. However, Martinez's effort curls past the post.

12.29It's really nice football from Honduras with Martinez and Figueroa both involved. However, they are forced back into their own half.

12.27All of a sudden it's all Morocco as Driss Fettouhi fires wide from outside the box. The warning signs are there for Honduras.

12.25Chance! Best opening of the match for Morocco as Labyad searches out Amrabat in the box. However, Figueroa makes a wonderful block at the final moment. That's better from Morocco.

12.23Espinoza continues to impress and this time he slips in Martinez. However, Mohamed Amsif just gathers the ball.

12.21Chance for Honduras as Espinoza slips the ball through to Jerry Bengtson, but the MLS striker is given offside.

12.19Again it's wasteful from Morocco as Noureddine Amrabat's ball is too long for Labyad. Morocco just have not got going thus far.

12.17Quite a few empty seats inside Hampden Park this afternoon. However, the fans are doing their best to raise the atmosphere!

12.15There's a really nice balance to the Honduran midfield at the moment with Roger Espinoza and Martinez dictating possession. However, we remain goalless.

12.13Another Moroccan attack breaks down as Martinez picks off the pressure. However, we are yet to see anything from the Honduran attack.

12.1110 minutes played in the opening match of the men's football competition - and it has been a lively start from both sides.

12.09It's smart work from Honduras as Mario Martinez finds Figueroa in the box. However, the danger is cleared for a corner.

12.07The game really has started at a frantic pace with both sides threatening. However, Barrada is causing all sorts of danger to the Honduran defence.

12.05First real chance of the afternoon comes to Morocco as Abdelaziz Barrada meets a Zakaria Labyad. However, Jose Mendoza collects in the Honduras goal.

12.03It's Honduras who have enjoyed early possession of the ball thus far. Wigan Athletic defender Maynor Figueroa will surely be a big player for them this afternoon.

12.01Nice bright early start from Morocco with Zakarya Bergdich setting the early pace around the park.

12.00Here we go then. We are underway. What a fortnight of football we have ahead.

12.00We got through the anthems without a diplomatic incident, unlike yesterday's match involving North Korea.

11.58Remember, these two teams are joined in Group D by Spain and Japan. Therefore, both will be keen to get off to the best possible start.

11.56Here we go then. Full steam ahead. The opening match of the men's football will soon get underway.

11.56Meanwhile, team news for the opening match can be found here.

11.54Meanwhile, this is Morocco's seventh Olympic tournament, but they have managed to reach the second round just once. They are also one of three teams, the others being Japan and Gabon, to not use their full quota of three over-23 players.

11.52Let's focus on our early match shall we? Honduras are playing in their third Olympic Games having previously qualified in 2000 and 2008. The player to watch for them is Eddie Hernandez - with the forward scoring three goals in qualifying.

11.50Many people's dark horses for the tournament are Uruguay and who are we to argue? They have brought Luis Suarez and Edison Cavani to London. Meanwhile, they are unbeaten in ten games at Olympic tournaments and therefore should also be considered as one of the favourites for the gold medal.

11.48That said, Spain are also no mugs. They've got the likes of Juan Mata, Jordi Alba and Javi Martinez to add first-team international experience. Meanwhile, Iker Muniain, Ander Herrera and Adrian Lopez could all have big tournaments.

11.46Brazil defeated Team GB 2-0 on Friday - and in truth it could have been so much more. They possess the experience of Thiago Silva, Marcelo and Hulk, coupled with the youthful excellence of Oscar and Lucas Moura and the pure magic of Neymar. However, quite remarkably they have failed to come away with anything in their last 11 Olympic football tournaments.

11.44What about the favourites? It would probably be fair to state that there are two, maybe three clear favourites for the competition - and Team GB are not one of them.

11.42Like any international tournament, the opening fixture is the most important. Three immediate points places you in a strong position, while elimination could easily occur following a disastrous beginning to the campaign.

11.40Phew, that's the order of play over and done with! Now let's take a little look at what could be expected from the opening day of action.

11.38The evening's play will be completed with the small matter of Team GB vs. Senegal at 8pm.

11.36Group C will be opened by Belarus and New Zealand at 7.45pm. Meanwhile, Brazil take on Egypt at the same time.

11.34Group A will be opened by the United Arab Emirates and Uruguay at 5pm. Meanwhile, Gabon face Switzerland in Group B at 5.15pm.

11.32Mexico and Korea will get underway at 2.30pm in Group B. Meanwhile, Group D's matchday one fixtures will be completed with Spain against Japan at 2.45pm.

11.30Hello all! As mentioned, the opening match of the men's competition will begin at 12pm with Honduras taking on Morocco in Group D.
