Sunderland have lost 3-1 in their pre-season friendly against Mexican outfit Pachuca in California.
The Black Cats made a sparkling start at Bonney Field, with Jack Rodwell giving the Premier League side a fifth-minute lead as the midfielder drilled his shot past a helpless Oscar Perez Rojas.
However, Los Tuzos hit back on 16 minutes when Ariel Nahuelpan's header proved too good for Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford.
On 25 minutes, the three-time CONCACAF Champions League winners were ahead as Hirving Lozano's cross found Nahuelpan before the forward squeezed his shot inside Pickford's near post.
Pachuca scored a third on 67 minutes when a thunderous shot from Lozano found the top corner of the Sunderland net as the Wearsiders struggled to contain the Mexican side in attack.
Los Tuzos were then awarded a penalty on 70 minutes after John O'Shea's foul on the dangerous Nahuelpan.
Pickford was able to tip away the subsequent spot kick from Ruben Botta, but Pachuca were able to hold on for victory.
