Kevin Anderson has progressed to the second round of the Paris Masters after his first-round opponent Mikhail Youzhny retired in the third set.
The 27-year-old South African was leading 2-1 in the final set when Youzhny pulled out with an injury to his right elbow.
Anderson lost a tight opening set 4-6 to the 31-year-old Russian but came back in the second to clinch it 7-6(0).
He looked to be course to victory in the contest when Youzhny had to retire.
Anderson will now face Roger Federer in the second round of the tournament.
