Tommy Smith is currently undergoing a medical at Cardiff City ahead of his proposed move from Queens Park Rangers.
Smith has been deemed surplus to requirements at Loftus Road following Mark Hughes's summer spending spree.
Cardiff boss Malky Mackay managed and played with Smith during his time with Watford and is keen to reunite with the versatile attacker.
The 32-year-old is expected to complete his move to Wales within the next 24 hours as the Bluebirds continue their raid of unwanted Loftus Road talent.
Defender Matthew Connolly and striker Heidar Helguson have already joined Cardiff from the Hoops this summer.
