Rangers are reportedly closing in on a double deal to sign Norwich City's Todd Cantwell and Swansea City's Morgan Whittaker.

Michael Beale, who was appointed head coach in November, is hoping to strengthen his squad this month as they aims to close the nine-point gap to rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

The Gers are yet to recruit any players so far this month, but they now appear to be on the verge of completing two deals for players plying their trade in the Championship.

According to Football Insider, Rangers have agreed a fee with Norwich to sign 24-year-old Cantwell, and the versatile midfielder is expected to travel to Glasgow to negotiate personal terms and undergo his medical.

Beale confirmed on Tuesday that the deal for Cantwell is progressing well but insisted that there was "no update" on his move to Ibrox.

"I'm really pleased with the way things are moving. No news doesn't mean bad news," Beale told reporters at a press conference ahead of Rangers' clash with Kilmarnock on Wednesday.

Cantwell, who has also been linked with PSV Eindhoven, joined Norwich's academy at the age of 10 before working his way through the youth ranks and eventually making his professional debut in 2017.

The midfielder helped the Canaries secure promotion from the Championship in 2018-19 and 2020-21 – winning the title in the latter campaign in which he recorded six goals and seven assists – either side of an impressive inaugural Premier League campaign in 2019-20.

However, Cantwell lost his place as a regular starter last season and was loaned out to Bournemouth in the Championship for the second half of the campaign, failing to score or assist in 11 appearances.

Cantwell has since been reintegrated into the first-team fold at Carrow Road, but has not contributed to a goal in 18 appearances and is yet to feature under new boss David Wagner.

Meanwhile, Swansea attacker Whittaker is another Englishman who has been targeted by Rangers, and they are allegedly hoping that an improved bid in the region of £1.5m will be accepted by the Welsh club.

Whittaker is said to be keen to join Rangers, and Beale has admitted that he is a player who the Glaswegian giants have been keeping a close eye on.

"He's a player that we know. I think he's a good player. He's certainly a player that I'm aware of," Beale told reporters. "We're looking at all the areas but obviously we want to bring more goals into the club. We need goalscorers in the building."

The 22-year-old spent the first half of this season on loan with League One leaders Plymouth Argyle, where he scored nine goals and provided seven assists in 25 league matches.

The England Under-21 international has recently been recalled from his loan spell by the Swans, but the 6ft 3in forward is yet to play for Russell Martin's side.

Rangers have also been linked with a potential swoop for Everton midfielder Tom Davies, but Beale has confirmed that "he's not going to be a Rangers player in the future" and is set to remain at Goodison Park. body check tags ::
