Reading have confirmed that Nigel Adkins will be named as the club's new manager.
The 48-year-old was sacked by Southampton in January after three years in charge, despite having guided them to back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League.
Adkins, who has previously managed Scunthorpe United, takes charge of the Royals ahead of their crucial match at Arsenal on Saturday with just eight matches remaining as they look to avoid relegation.
He replaces former boss Brian McDermott at the Madejski Stadium, who was sacked just 33 days after being named manager of the month.
Brighton & Hove Albion boss Gus Poyet is thought to have turned down the job, while Paolo Di Canio and Roberto Di Matteo were both linked with the role.
The Royals will host a news conference later today to confirm the appointment.
Reading are currently seven points from safety in the table and sit in 19th place.
