Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez has revealed his delight at gaining a call-up to the Spain squad for their upcoming World Cup qualification matches.
The centre-back, who has replaced injured Napoli defender Raul Albiol in the squad, is expected to be on the bench for the clashes against Belarus and Georgia.
"To be back with the national team and with these teammates is the best thing possible, it is the greatest. In the time that I was last here and in returning, it has been amazing for me. I am very happy and proud," he told reporters at a press conference.
"After so long without being called up, you value it more. I have really wanted to help in qualification for the World Cup. The call-up was a big surprise to me because in the end I was not expecting it, whilst it is also a penalty for Albiol.
"In the end, one is a footballer and we understand about injuries, but I wish him well and I will enjoy these games. I am pleased and grateful for the call and I now want to help and support the team in these games that are so important."
Martinez has one Spanish cap to his name.
