Martin O'Neill "disappointed" by Poland defeat

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill says that his team failed to take their chances as they were beaten 2-1 by Poland in their final Euro 2016 qualifier.

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill has said that his team can still reach Euro 2016, despite missing out on an automatic spot.

The Irish will have to come through a playoff if they are to qualify for next year's tournament in France, after slipping to a 2-1 defeat against Poland this evening.

"We're obviously disappointed," he told Sky Sports News. "We knew it was going to be a difficult game. To come here with the same energy as we showed against Germany, that was always going to be difficult with such a short turnaround, and away from home.

"We made life difficult for ourselves at times and we weren't quite able to do it. Despite putting a lot of pressure on them it wasn't to be. But we are still in there, we can still make it.

"I thought Richard [Keogh] might have scored his chance, we knew that in the last 15 minutes we would get a decent opportunity to score a goal, and that was it. We didn't take it, it's gone, but we live to fight another day."

Ireland will find out which team they will face in the playoffs next Sunday.
