Damien Duff could be left stranded on 99 caps for the Republic of Ireland due to an administrative error.
Duff retired after Euro 2012 having become only the fifth player in Irish history to notch up 100 caps.
However, a 0-0 draw with Hungary in June was not registered properly as the referee was not appointed correctly, so FIFA could wipe the game from their record books.
An FAI spokesperson vowed to investigate the incident, saying: "We will follow this up with FIFA and the Hungarians."
If left on 99 caps, Duff could be tempted out of retirement for Ireland's World Cup qualifier against Germany next month.
