Martin O'Neill secures a 3-0 win against Latvia in his first match in charge of the Republic of Ireland.

Martin O'Neill's first match in charge of the Republic of Ireland has ended with a convincing win against Latvia.

Ireland could have taken an early lead through James McCarthy, but his shot from outside the box was blocked.

The home side continued on the front foot and Robbie Keane had a great chance to grab the opener when a free kick fell at his feet. However, the striker hit his attempt straight at Andris Vanins.

Following more pressure, Ireland made their dominance count with a headed goal from Keane.

Keane then nearly doubled his and Ireland's tally for the evening. He picked up the ball just outside the box, before running at goal and curling a shot that forced the goalkeeper to get down low and save.

Latvia, meanwhile, struggled to create any sort of chance in the opening 45 minutes.

Wes Hoolahan continued the theme of the first half with more Ireland pressure as he picked out McClean in the box. However, his effort went over the bar.

Aiden McGeady then worked his way to the edge of the area and lashed a shot on goal that Vanins had to beat away.

McGeady did double Ireland's lead minutes later. Artis Lazdins gave the ball away to McGeady, and the former Celtic player took one touch before firing in a low effort.

O'Neill's first match in charge got even more comfortable 10 minutes from the end as Shane Long slotted in from close range after Seamus Coleman had found him with a cross.
