Rotherham United booked their place in the second round of the Capital One Cup as Jordan Bowery's strike gave the Millers a 1-0 victory over Cambridge United at New York Stadium this evening.
The visitors began the game brightly as Jordan Slew and Luke Berry both tested Rotherham goalkeeper Kelle Roos with early efforts.
Steve Evans's side took some time to ease their way into the game but had chances of their own inside the opening half-hour, most notably when Matt Derbyshire failed to turn Joe Newell and Richard Smallwood crosses home.
However, just as it seemed that the game would remain goalless at the break, Bowery popped up to head his side into the lead from close range.
Derbyshire was sent clear off the Cambridge backline minutes after the restart, only to see Chris Dunn deny him with a smart save.
Dunn was called into action again midway through the second half when he flew across his goal to tip Derbyshire's header from a Lewis Buxton cross around the post.
Greg Halford then made a last-ditch tackle on Slew as the U's forward bore down on goal, but Rotherham United held on to advance.
