Sassuolo remain in the bottom three of Serie A following a 2-1 home defeat to Udinese on Wednesday evening.
Udinese started slightly the stronger of the two teams but were struggling to break down Sassuolo early on, with Andrea Lazzari having a shot from range blocked.
Reto Ziegler then undid his side's defensive work by bringing down Dusan Basta and Antonio Di Natale made no mistake in putting his side in front from the spot.
Sassuolo regrouped quickly and were level within 10 minutes through Simone Zaza, who finished from Luca Antei's pass as his side broke quickly.
Both sides continued to have chances but the vital third goal came 10 minutes into the second half, as Luis Muriel fired low into the far corner from the left side of the box.
Antei had a good chance to level the scores late on but his effort from inside the box went well over the bar and Udinese clung on for the points.
