Hamburger SV and Schalke 04 head into half time at 0-0 in the Bundesliga's evening clash.
Schalke almost went ahead within the first few minutes after Franco di Santo latched on to a deep cross but his header at the far post was pushed onto the bar by Jaroslav Drobny.
Leroy Sane was put through after 20 minutes but with the youngster bearing down on goal, his touch failed him and the ball rolled comfortably for the Hamburg goalkeeper to collect.
Aaron Hunt then had the first chance for Hamburg, hitting the ball from outside the box, but his shot was straight at Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann.
Sane almost made up for his mistake late on in the first half, with the 19-year-old firing from distance but Drobny was equal to the youngster's effort.
