Newcastle United's preparations for the new Premier League campaign have been boosted by a comfortable victory over Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 and a promising performance from one the club's young talents.
The Magpies were ahead inside 18 minutes after academy graduate Rolando Aarons, making his first appearance for the senior side, provided a tantalising cross for new signing Emmanuel Riviere, who nodded the ball home.
Schalke struggled to conjure a response, with Kaan Ayhan's free kick as close as the hosts came to an equaliser.
Nine minutes after the interval, United extended their lead with Aarons beating his marker and producing a cross that ended up beating Ralf Fahrmann and found the back of the net.
Newcastle added a third with just over a quarter of an hour remaining when one new signing, Facundo Ferreyra, fed another, Remy Cabella, before the former Montpellier man calmly slotted the ball home.
Donis Avdijaj scored deep in stoppage time to give the hosts a consolation, but Alan Pardew's men emerged victorious.
