Scotland boss Alex McLeish hails "massive" win over Hungary

Scotland boss Alex McLeish expresses his delight following his side's 'controlled' 1-0 win over Hungary in Budapest.

Alex McLeish has praised his Scotland players for producing a "confident" display in their 1-0 win over Hungary on Tuesday evening.

The 59-year-old got off the mark with his first win in his second spell in charge of the national side thanks to a close-range finish from Matt Phillips early in the second half.

Scotland had earlier missed a penalty through Charlie Mulgrew, while James Forrest missed a couple of good chances, but McLeish was ultimately happy to simply get a victory on the board following on from Friday's 1-0 home loss to Costa Rica.

"I was disappointed on Friday - I hate to lose but I have got to say, they continued where they left off," BBC Sport quotes him as saying. "The tempo was tremendous, we had players really confident and using the ball. We had some great performances from everybody to a man.

"You could say it wasn't going to happen for us when we missed the penalty but we were in control of our emotions and they came back. It's massive. It gives them the evidence that they can win a football match. They virtually controlled it.

"We had one slip, when Allan [McGregor] came to the rescue, but I have nothing but praise for everybody. We played some players with more experience and a bit more knowledge of each other.

"When I took the job I said I thought we had players with good athleticism and speed, but could we find a system to play with tempo and win the ball back immediately? There was real intensity tonight."

Scotland's next games will be the end-of-season friendlies against Peru and Mexico on May 29 and June 2 respectively.
