Southampton assistant manager Andy Crosby was particularly impressed by the performance of Jay Rodriguez during his side's 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night.
The 23-year-old forward, who joined the Saints in a £6m move from Burnley over the summer, scored his first two goals for his new employers to help them progress to the fourth round of the League Cup.
"He had a massive impact," said Crosby. "I thought his movement was excellent against two centre-halves that perhaps wanted him to come short.
"I thought his movement in between and down the side of them was really good. He is one of many players who have taken their opportunity.
"He has had to bide his time and wait for his chance but he has been a great character around the place and wants to improve. He is at a good age for the club and has taken his opportunity."
Rodriguez scored 21 goals in 42 matches last season.
