Goals from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Joel Matip helped Schalke 04 to a 2-0 win over Southampton in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday.
Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino named new signing Victor Wanyama in his starting lineup, while there were also spots for Kelvin Davis, Jason Puncheon and Jay Rodriguez.
Schalke also named a strong team from the start with Jermaine Jones, Julian Draxler and Michel Bastos all included.
The Premier League side had a good chance to take the lead with 11 minutes on the clock, but Rickie Lambert's header was pushed wide by Timo Hildebrand in the Schalke goal.
Bastos had the German team's best chance of the first period after 25 minutes, but the Brazilian could not finish past Davis, who was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the early stages.
Puncheon had the last real chance of the first half when he struck an effort from outside the box, but Hildebrand was on hand to make a fine save at the vital moment.
Both sides made changes at the interval, but the first real chance in the second half fell to Huntelaar, who met a Bastos cross with a powerful header, only to see Davis make another smart save.
Huntelaar had his goal just before the hour mark, however, when he collected a loose ball inside the box before rolling his effort into the bottom corner.
Schalke had their second 10 minutes later when young defender Matip tapped home from close range after some poor defending from the Saints.
Both sides had a host of half-chances in the latter stages, but neither could add to the scoring as the German outfit held on for a 2-0 victory.
