Vicente del Bosque: 'We beat Macedonia by chance'

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque claims that his team "got the basics wrong" during Tuesday's 1-0 win over Macedonia in their Euro 2016 Group C qualifier.

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque has admitted that he was far from pleased with his team's performance during Tuesday's Euro 2016 Group C qualifier against Macedonia.

An own goal from Macedonia goalkeeper Tome Pacovski secured all three points for La Roja, moving them two points clear at the top of their group with two games remaining.

However, Del Bosque, who has also praised Macedonia, has said that the European champions won the match "by chance".

"We beat [Macedonia] by chance and got the basics wrong. We didn't play well. It's hard to explain [why we played how we did], but we showed plenty of willingness in the first half and not so much in the second," Del Bosque told reporters.

"We scored our goal by chance. Once we scored, we stopped playing. We played slowly, without any substance. We played a little bit but didn't succeed in grasping the three basic concepts of football; defending, creating chances and finishing them off.

"[Macedonia] did well. They were energetic, keen and their fans were very supportive. They were a tough team to play and, to their credit, didn't let us play."

Spain are now one win away from guaranteeing their spot at next summer's showpiece event in France.
