Toni Kroos scored the only goal of the game as Germany secured a 1-0 victory over Spain at the Estadio de Balaidos in Vigo.

Both sides enjoyed spells on top either side of the break, but it was left to Kroos to break the deadlock in the 89th minute with a powerful effort from 25 yards.

Was the result fair?

It's difficult to argue that Germany were actually good enough to collect all three points. In truth, both sides would have probably accepted that a draw was a fair result. Neither team produced their most impressive display, and Vicente del Bosque and Joachim Low would have liked their fringe players to have produced better displays. However, the vital contribution came from a world-class player as Kroos carried the visitors home with a fine strike which proved to be too strong for Kiko Casilla to handle.

Spain's performance

Promising for spells, but uninspiring for long stretches of the match. As always, Del Bosque's side kept the ball very well and they dictated the tempo of the game for much of the first half. However, they lacked a cutting edge to their play without the likes of Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Andres Iniesta on the pitch. On a more positive note, the hosts were excellent at the back, and probably deserved a clean sheet before Kroos broke the deadlock late on.

Germany's performance

There wasn't a big difference between the two sides tonight. In fact, Germany struggled with similar problems to Spain, finding it difficult to build up pressure due to poor decision making in the final third of the pitch. Mario Gotze, who is expected to drive the team forward in games, drifted out of the game far too often, and the visitors lacked a threat after Thomas Muller picked up an injury in the first half. Antonio Rudiger and Benedikt Howedes impressed at the back, but Low was forced to rely on the quality of Kroos on a difficult night for the world champions.

Nolito: Spain struggled to threaten on a regular basis, but it wasn't down to the performance of Nolito. The Celta Vigo was very impressive on his debut as he troubled the visitors with his eagerness to chase down lost causes. Unlucky not to score on his home ground with a free kick which forced Ron-Robert Zieler into a fine save.

Biggest gaffe

Sebastian Rudy will be furious with himself for not scoring his first international goal after finding inside the box. At the very least he should have tested Iker Casillas, but he could only send a shot into the stands.

Referee performance

Stefan Johannesson enjoyed an easy night at the office as he managed to make it through the 90 minutes without making any big mistakes.

Spain: Del Bosque's side continue their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign against Ukraine on March 27.
