Fernando Torres confident Spain can bounce back

Fernando Torres says Spain have enough character to bounce back from their opening World Cup game defeat against the Netherlands.

Spain striker Fernando Torres has expressed his belief that his teammates have the ability to bounce back from their defeat against the Netherlands.

La Roja, who are the current holders of the World Cup, lost 5-1 in their opening group game on Friday night.

Vicente del Bosque's side also suffered defeat in their opening game four years ago before lifting the cup, and Torres believes that Spain can repeat the feat once more.

"Each one of us has to look carefully at himself and learn from his mistakes," the 30-year-old is quoted as saying by Spanish publication Marca. "There are players with enough character to keep going forward.

"Sadly we have already experienced a situation like this one, maybe not so tough, but quite similar, in South Africa, and now we have to forget about Holland because if we are going to get through to the next stage we have to beat Chile.

"There is no point fretting about goal difference because if you don't win, there are no more figures to add up. It's simple - we have to keep going for the win."

Spain take on Chile in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday night.
