Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has admitted that his side lost to a "better" opponent in their 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley last night.
Los Blancos had not been beaten in the group stages of the Champions League in five years prior to the encounter, which saw Spurs race into a three-goal lead just after the hour mark courtesy of a Dele Alli brace and a strike from Christian Eriksen.
The result came just three days after Madrid suffered a surprise 2-1 loss at Girona to fall eight points off the pace in La Liga and, speaking after the game last night, Modric said that his former side "deserved" their famous win.
"It was a defeat that we did not expect, it is very hard to take," he told beIN Sports. "This is football and these things happen, I think Tottenham deserved to win. They were much better than us and we now have to go and find solutions to our situation.
"Real Madrid always bounce back. We have had tough situations before and we always come back.
"I don't think it is a physical problem because we are physically well. We are not playing as we know we can, we have to do everything to recover our form. Physically and mentally we are fine but in this game we were not good enough, and we have to find our way."
Meanwhile, Modric's captain Sergio Ramos claimed after the game that Spurs' win was a "deceptive" result.
