Who has been Tottenham Hotspur's player of the season?

The Sports Mole team select who they believe has been Tottenham Hotspur's player of the season for the 2019-20 campaign.

It has been a tumultuous 2019-20 campaign for Tottenham Hotspur, who have failed to build on their trip to the Champions League final last term and appear unlikely to return to the competition next season.

Mauricio Pochettino, whose spell in charge had been one of the most successful in Tottenham's recent history despite failing to pick up silverware, was sacked in November, less than six months after leading the club to their first ever Champions League final.

Jose Mourinho replaced him and initially saw an upturn in fortunes, but the North London outfit went into the coronavirus lockdown having lost five and won none of their last six games - the Portuguese manager's longest winless run of his career.

Spurs sit eighth in the table, seven points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea, and have already been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions and the Champions League.

Here, the Sports Mole team select who they believe has been Tottenham's player of the season so far.

Barney Corkhill, Editor: Son Heung-min

Tottenham's struggles as a team are encapsulated by their lack of contenders for this award; usually they have a host of star names competing, but Dele Alli has been below-par in general, Christian Eriksen left in January and Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane have both spent significant chunks of the season out injured.

Spurs have the worst defensive record in the top 11 and so for me the only realistic option remaining is Son Heung-min. The South Korean has directly contributed to 25 goals across all competitions this season, which is comfortably clear of next-best Kane.

Son has scored 16 of those goals himself - including nine in the Premier League - while he leads the way in terms of assists and shots. Without his Premier League goals this season, Spurs would be eight points worse off and sitting 15th in the table.

Matt Law, Football Editor: Son Heung-min

There is no getting away from the fact that it has been a very disappointing season for Tottenham, who face a serious battle to make the top four if play is allowed to resume in the coming weeks.

Harry Kane has scored 11 Premier League goals this season, but for me, Son Heung-min has been the club's player of the season thus far.

The 27-year-old has contributed nine goals and eight assists in 21 league appearances, only second to Kane in terms of goals, while he leads the assists chart for the club this term.

Son has also had the most shots (64) for Jose Mourinho's side in the league during the 2019-20 campaign and had been in excellent form before picking up an arm injury against Aston Villa in the middle of February.

Darren Plant, Senior Reporter: Son Heung-min

With only Toby Alderweireld having been a regular in the Tottenham Hotspur starting lineup this season, several names come to mind when considering the player of the season.

However, with nine goals and seven assists from 21 Premier League outings, Son Heung-min gets my vote. Before breaking his arm, the South Korea international netted goals in three successive wins, results which were crucial in keeping Spurs in contention for a Champions League spot.

You have to go all the way back to December 7 for his last assist, but Son has been a matchwinner on multiple occasions this season, something which gives him the edge over the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

Dan Lewis, Senior Reporter: Son Heung-min

Following the high of reaching last season's Champions League final, 2019-20 has been extremely underwhelming from Tottenham's perspective. There have still been some impressive performers in their ranks, though, most notably Son Heung-min.

The versatile attacker always tends to step up when called upon, which again proved the case when Harry Kane was ruled out through injury.

Son scored a combined 14 goals in the Premier League and Champions League, on top of chipping in with eight assists, including a run of six goals in five games prior to picking up an injury of his own in February.

Ben Knapton, Reporter: Son Heung-min

It has been a turbulent campaign for Tottenham Hotspur and it is difficult to single out one player, but Son Heung-min has continued to impress amid Harry Kane's injury woes.

The 27-year-old was just starting to hit top form prior to his injury and the coronavirus postponement, netting six times in his most recent five matches including that last-gasp winner against Aston Villa.

A total of sixteen goals and eight assists across all competitions is a terrific return notwithstanding the off-the-pitch issues that have bedevilled Spurs, and should the Premier League season be able to resume, the South Korean's absence will certainly damage Tottenham's hopes of a Champions League spot.
