Andre Villas-Boas: 'Hugo Lloris start made sense'

Andre Villas-Boas says that he was right to choose Hugo Lloris over Brad Friedel.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has insisted that he got it right by starting Hugo Lloris over Brad Friedel in the win over Aston Villa.

The Frenchman started his first Premier League game for the club as two second-half goals from Steven Caulker and Aaron Lennon helped Spurs ensure a 2-0 victory over the Villans.

The decision ended the American goalkeeper's run of playing 310 consecutive top-flight matches, but Villas-Boas is adamant that he made the right choice by picking Lloris.

"It was a chance for Lloris to get acquainted with the Premier League," said Villas-Boas. "So, bearing in mind he played in the Europa League, played today and will hopefully get two games for France it will give him some continuity which will allow him to pick up his form and allow us to count on him in the future.

"It was something which we had spoken about, between the technical staff. It seemed something that made sense towards keeping the player (Lloris) in form and give him a consecutive run of games, which is important.

"It was nothing to do with performances from Brad [Friedel] because he has been immense. Brad is still performing at the highest level and we respect that. In the end he was disappointed with the decision but he accepted it, he took it as a great professional and helped Hugo."

Spurs are currently seventh in the Premier League table.
