Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas backs Prime Minister David Cameron's comments over the club's use of the word 'Yid'.

Andre Villas-Boas has backed Prime Minister David Cameron's comments in response to the chanting of the world 'Yid' by Tottenham Hotspur fans.

Cameron told the Jewish Chronicle that there was a difference between Spurs fans "describing themselves as Yids" as opposed to the word being used as an insult.

Tottenham fans have long called themselves "Yids" but the Football Association says that the chants could lead to a banning order or criminal prosecution.

The club insist there is no malice intended by the chanting and Villas-Boas has backed the Prime Minister for his say on the issue.

"He can get involved anywhere, he is the Prime Minister. I think his intervention was probably what Spurs fans would want to hear," he is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.

"I think our fans sing it with pride, it is something that they defend. It is not sang with offence.

"I see no problem with it. The problem is finding out what is seen as an offence. That is why the FA has come out and made a statement so hopefully this won't become a debate that leads nowhere."

Tottenham are next in action when they host Tromso IL in the Europa League tomorrow night.
