Marseille have completed the signing of midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Tottenham Hotspur.

The 28-year-old has joined the Ligue 1 club on an initial season-long loan deal with an obligation to buy for a reported £17m next summer.

Spurs are also understood to have included a sell-on clause in the agreement, as manager Ange Postecoglou continues his summer clearout in North London.

Hojbjerg becomes the seventh player to leave Tottenham this summer after Eric Dier, Tanguy Ndombele, Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon, Japhet Tanganga and Joe Rodon.

The Denmark international joined Spurs from Southampton for around £20m in the summer of 2020 and made a total of 184 appearances for the Lilywhites in all competitions, scoring 10 goals and registering 16 assists.

Hojbjerg's finest moment in a Spurs shirt arguably came against the team that he has now joined, when he scored a late winner at the Stade Velodrome in a Champions League group-stage match in November 2022.

Hojbjerg departs Spurs after four-year North London spell

Hojbjerg initially established himself as a first-team regular at Tottenham, but he fell down the pecking order following the arrival of Postecoglou last summer.

The Dane was reduced to just eight Premier League starts in the 2023-24 campaign, as well as only one start in both the FA Cup and EFL Cup, with the likes of Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur all preferred ahead of him in midfield.

Hojbjerg has been strongly linked with a plethora of European clubs over the last 12 months, including the likes of Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and more recently Fulham.

However, Hojbjerg will embark on a fresh challenge in France with Roberto De Zerbi's Marseille, linking up with fellow new recruits Mason Greenwood, Ismael Kone, Bamo Meite and Lilian Brassier.

The midfielder, who will wear the No.23 shirt, has since taken to Instagram to react to his transfer to Marseille, posting: "A beautiful day in Marseille. The work can begin! LET'S GO OM."

Marseille are now set to shift their transfer focus to a player from the red side of North London, with a recent report linking the French club with a move for Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah. body check tags ::
