Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the arrival of Guglielmo Vicario in a reported £17.2m deal from Empoli.

The goalkeeper has agreed a five-year contract with the Premier League outfit, putting pen to paper on a deal which will keep him at the club until 2028.

Vicario joins after spending two years at Empoli, initially on a season-long loan before that move was made permanent last summer.

The 26-year-old made 71 appearances in total during his time at the Carlo Castellani Stadium, helping the club to 14th-placed finishes in both of his seasons there.

Vicario's form earned him a maiden call-up to the Italy squad in September 2022 for matches against England and Hungary, although he was unused and is still waiting for his first senior international appearance.

Spurs had been in the market for a new goalkeeper after long-serving number one Hugo Lloris confirmed earlier this summer that he is keen to leave the club for a new challenge.

The North Londoners had been heavily linked with a move for Brentford's David Raya, but the Bees' refusal to budge on their £40m asking price forced Tottenham to look elsewhere.

The deal to bring Vicario to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is thought to be worth around €20m (£17.2m), with added bonuses on top of that figure.

Vicario becomes the first new arrival under incoming boss Ange Postecoglou, although Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski have made their moves permanent.

The Italian will wear the number 13 shirt that was last worn by Michel Vorm, and could make his competitive debut for the club when they face Brentford on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season. body check tags ::
