Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas-Boas wants Jermain Defoe to see out the last 18 months of his contract at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has declared that he wants Jermain Defoe to see out the remainder of his contract at White Hart Lane, as rumours surrounding the England striker's future gather pace.

Defoe has been linked with a lucrative move to Major League Soccer with Toronto FC in the last 48 hours, while Stoke City were reportedly interested in his services this summer.

Villas-Boas remains confident that Defoe will stay with Spurs for the final 18 months of his deal, while insisting that the forward is "extremely happy" with life in North London.

He told Sky Sports News: "I have seen in the press that there is reported interest [from Toronto], but we want the player to stay on and hold on to those last years of his contract.

"The player at the moment is our top goal scorer and he is chasing the European record for the club as well which is important for his individual motivation.

"I think he is extremely happy, not only because of what he has achieved, but also because of the smile on his face. He has had a better start than he had last year. That is an impressive goals tally and he is a player that everyone cherishes."

The 31-year-old has scored eight goals in all competitions so far this season, but is yet to open his account in the Premier League.
