Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has claimed that he can earn a recall to Roy Hodgson's England squad.
Defoe has not played for England since November 2013, but having scored 19 times in 55 international matches, the 32-year-old is certain that he can catch the attention of the England boss with his performances for the Black Cats.
"I thought my goalscoring record was good for England, the last time I checked," he told reporters. "People talk about age and that I'm 32 but what does that mean?
"If you look after yourself and are performing, you deserve a chance.
"A lot of younger players have come in and done well but now, I am back in the Premier League and if I am performing and scoring goals, I'd like to think I would get another opportunity."
Sunderland continue their search for a first Premier League win of the season when they meet Aston Villa on Saturday.
