Toronto FC have emerged as the leading contender to sign United States international Jozy Altidore during January's transfer window.
The Sunderland striker has been linked with a return to the MLS after scoring just twice in 15 appearances for Gus Poyet's side this season.
According to ESPN, New York Red Bulls would be unable to meet Altidore's wage demands in order to bring him to his hometown side, but Toronto and Portland Timbers are both interested in signing him.
The report adds that Portland are unlikely to be able to complete a deal, making Toronto, who could lose Jermain Defoe during the current transfer window, the frontrunners.
