Garry Monk backs Bafetimbi Gomis to shine in Wilfried Bony absence

Garry Monk assures Bafetimbi Gomis that he will be Swansea City's first-choice striker while Wilfried Bony is away on Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Swansea City manager Garry Monk is hopeful that Bafetimbi Gomis can replicate his performance against Tranmere Rovers in the club's coming fixtures.

The departure of star striker Wilfried Bony to the Africa Cup of Nations has opened up a gap for the Frenchman, and he took his first chance with both hands by scoring a double in this afternoon's 6-2 FA Cup victory.

Gomis has made just four league starts for the Swans since joining in the summer, although Monk admits that he will be given more game time over the next few weeks in the absence of Bony.

"Gomis probably hasn't had the amount of minutes he would have liked; he's still played of course but in terms of why I brought him to the club, you could see it there today," Sky Sports News quotes him as saying.

"Hopefully he takes it into this next period now, he will be the first choice, and he is ready to go and hopefully he produces performances like that."

Nathan Dyer, Tom Carroll, Wayne Routledge and Modou Barrow completed the rout for Swansea at Prenton Park.
