Breel Embolo and Admir Mehmedi score the goals as Switzerland record a 2-0 win over Portugal in their 2018 World Cup qualification opener.

Euro 2016 winners Portugal were beaten 2-0 by Switzerland in their 2018 World Cup qualification match on Tuesday night.

Without skipper Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal struggled for inspiration and suffered defeat in their Group B opener courtesy of first-half goals from Breel Embolo and Admir Mehmedi.

Portugal had a glorious chance to take the lead in just the fifth minute when Bernardo Silva broke into the Switzerland box, but the attacker could not find a route past Yann Sommer in the Switzerland goal.

It was the home side that made the breakthrough in the 24th minute when Embolo converted from close range after Ricardo Rodriguez had seen his curling free kick kept out by the alert Rui Patricio.

Switzerland scored a second on the 30-minute mark when Mehmedi collected a through-pass from Haris Seferovic before finding the top corner from the edge of the box.

Portugal's best chance of the first half came in the 37th minute when Raphael Guerreiro found time and space inside the Switzerland box, but his effort was blocked following a period of pinball inside the area.

Jose Fonte and Nani both came close for the visitors in the second period, but the former saw his goal-bound strike blocked, before the latter hit the post with a header in the 82nd minute.

The match did end on a sour note for Switzerland, however, with Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka given his marching orders in second-half stoppage time for picking up two yellow cards within the space of a minute.

Next up for Portugal is a home match against Andorra on October 7, while Switzerland will make the trip to Hungary on the same night.
