Casey Stoney doubts Olympic football future

GB women's football captain Casey Stoney is pessimistic over the future of British football at the Olympics.

Team GB women's football captain Casey Stoney has expressed her belief that Britain's participation in football at the Olympics will not extend beyond this summer's Games.

Team GB were dumped out of the tournament by Canada last night, but caught the eye of the nation with impressive attendances at their games, including a world record attendance for a women's match when they faced Brazil.

However, Stoney believes that despite the interest in it, there is no chance of the competition being included again.

"The women's game is the perfect fit for the Olympics. If you can't see that from this Olympics, you will never see it," said Stoney.

"Realistically, the chances are zero but I would be so disappointed if it didn't happen again. Look at the interest. Nearly four million watching the Brazil game on TV, 70,000 in the stadium. If we had got to the final, we would have sold Wembley out without a shadow of a doubt.

"The interest is there and it has to continue. This tournament has captured the attention of a nation. Hopefully the people upstairs are listening."

It is estimated that over 150,000 spectators packed the stadiums to see GB's women during their Olympic campaign.
