Uruguay kick off their 2022 FIFA World Cup journey with a clash against South Korea at the Education City Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Aiming to put on a show in Qatar under the tutelage of their new head coach, Diego Alonso's men are the favourites to see off the threat of their Asian counterparts.

Thursday's meeting in Al Rayyan with be the ninth encounter between the teams across all competitions, with the first clash coming as far back as 1982 in the now-abolished Nehru Cup.

The South Americans have avoided defeat in seven of the previous eight editions of this fixture, winning six of them and drawing one.

However, South Korea's only victory came in the most recent clash in an international friendly back in 2018, when goals from Ui-Jo Hwang and Jung Woo-Young propelled Paulo Bento's men to a 2-1 triumph.

Nonetheless, Uruguay have plenty of cause for optimism having claimed 1-0 and 2-1 victories in the only two World Cup matches involving the sides in 1990 and 2010 respectively.
