Uruguay improved their chances of reaching the knockout stages of the World Cup following a 2-1 win over England in their Group D match in Sao Paulo.

Luis Suarez headed Uruguay into the lead at the end of the first half, before Wayne Rooney drew England level after the break.

With six minutes left to play Suarez broke through on goal, before firing past Joe Hart to win the match for his side.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at who impressed during a crucial 90 minutes.

URUGUAY

Goal

Fernando Muslera: Solid display from Uruguay's number one. He was left exposed as Rooney tapped home for his goal, but did make an important save to deny the striker early in the second half. (7/10)

Defence

Jose Maria Gimenez: Thrown into the match in place of the injured Lugano and performed admirably. He made sure that Sturridge and Welbeck saw very little of the ball in the final third. (7/10)

Martin Caceres: Dependable performance from the Juventus man. He got forward well and was solid at the back throughout the evening. (7/10)

Diego Godin: Should have been sent off in the first half. He had already been booked for a handball and his foul on Sterling warranted a second yellow card. He ended up staying on the pitch and put in a dependable display. (6/10)

Alvaro Pereira: Kept Sterling quiet all night long down the right. He was caught out by Johnson for England's goal, but bravely continued after getting a blow to the head. (6/10)

Midfield

Alvaro Gonzalez: Industrious display from the midfielder. Never stopped running and made sure that Gerrard and Henderson had very little influence on the game. (6/10)

Egidio Arevalo Rios: Determined showing from the midfielder. He was a strong presence for his team all evening and led by example for the younger players. (7/10)

Cristian Rodriguez: Came close with a powerful strike on goal early on. His influence on the match faded in the later stages. (6/10)

Nicolas Lodeiro: Made very little impact throughout the match and came off in the second half for Stuani. (6/10)

Attack

Edinson Cavani: Brilliant ball to set up Suarez for the first goal. Had glimpses of the goal, but was kept quiet by England's back four. (7/10)

Luis Suarez: Inspirational performance from the Liverpool forward. Took both of his goals exceptionally well and was the difference this evening. He may not have been fully fit, but did enough to rescue his country after defeat in their opening match. (9/10)

Substitutes

Christian Stuani: Entered the pitch midway through the second half and produced a busy performance in the midfield. (6/10)

Jorge Fucile: Came on late on and helped to shore up the Uruguayan defence. (6/10)

Sebastian Coates: Was only on the pitch for the final two minutes of the match as his team looked to hold on to the three points. (6/10)

ENGLAND

Goal

Joe Hart: Had no chance in keeping out either of Suarez's goals. Was alert in goal to keep out two of the forward's dangerous corners, in what was a largely quiet evening. (6/10)

Defence

Glen Johnson: Did brilliantly to set up Rooney for England's goal and provided an outlet down the right-hand side of the pitch throughout the match. He could have done better to prevent the first goal, but stood off Cavani and allowed him to pick out Suarez in the box. (6/10)

Gary Cahill: Solid display all night by the centre-back, who won everything in the air. Kept things simple and tried to build England's attacks from the back. (6/10)

Phil Jagielka: Lost Suarez for the first goal and never really recovered. His display will raise questions over his international future. (5/10)

Leighton Baines: One of England's better players and was solid throughout in defence. He got forward more down the left in the second half and delivered a number of teasing crosses into the box. (6/10)

Midfield

Steven Gerrard: A night to forget for the captain as his header back towards his own goal led to Suarez scoring the winner. Could not exert his usual influence on the match and his set-piece deliveries constantly let him down. (5/10)

Jordan Henderson: Decent performance from the young midfielder who kept possession well all evening. Was taken off for Lambert late on as England chased an equaliser. (6/10)

Raheem Sterling: Struggled to get into the game and did not make as positive an impact as he did against Italy last time out. Was taken off for Barkley midway through the second half. (6/10)

Attack

Wayne Rooney: Finally ended his barren run of games without a goal at the World Cup. He was unlucky to miss two decent efforts in the first half and looked a threat going forward all evening. (7/10)

Danny Welbeck: Invective performance from the Manchester United forward. Did not see much of the ball and was taken off for Lallana late on. (6/10)

Daniel Sturridge: Along with Rooney, he was England's best attacking threat in the match. He saw a couple of attempts saved by Muslera, but was largely kept quiet. (6/10)

Substitutes

Ross Barkley: Tried to make his mark on the game and showed some neat touches, but could not affect the outcome. (6/10)

Adam Lallana: Came on for the last 20 minutes, but struggled to get into the game. (5/10)

Rickie Lambert: Entered the pitch following Suarez's second goal and had little time to make an impression. (5/10)
