Darren Mattocks scored the only goal of the game to fire the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 1-0 victory over nine-man Real Salt Lake in the MLS.
The home side threatened first as Alvaro Saborio created an opening in the final third of the pitch, but the forward lost his composure as he blazed his strike over the bar.
Salt Lake pressed forward again, working the ball well to Jordan Allen in space and he fired a low strike towards the bottom corner which David Ousted was able to stop.
In the second half, the home side continued to have the better of the opportunities as Saborio rose highest in the area to head a corner at goal, but Ousted was alert as he made another solid save.
Sebastian Saucedo nearly found the net as he powered an effort at goal from distance, but once again Ousted denied the home side as he got down quickly, palming the ball to safety.
Real were reduced to 10 men when Saucedo was given a straight red card for a poor challenge on Mauro Rosales just 13 minutes after arriving on the pitch as a substitute.
The Whitecaps took advantage of the situation as they took the lead in the 80th minute. Russell Teibert lifted a cross into the box for the run of Mattocks, who powered a header past Nick Rimando.
Matters got worse for Salt Lake as they were reduced to nine men when Jamison Olave was dismissed for receiving his second yellow card, which allowed the visitors to comfortably see out the win.
