David Moyes has succumbed to his first defeat as manager of Real Sociedad after his side were comfortably beaten 4-0 away from home by Villarreal in La Liga this evening.
Sociedad had found the fixture difficult from the opening minutes and they were almost behind early on when Luciano Vietto squandered the first half's major chance, firing over following Ikechukwu Uche's flick-on.
Villarreal continued to dominate in the early stages of the second period and they soon took the lead when Bruno shot his free kick over the wall and against the bar, before the ball hit the back of keeper Enaut Zubikarai and was forced into the net.
The hosts were 2-0 ahead after 73 minutes as Denis Cheryshev gambled to collect a loose ball inside the box, which allowed him to fire into the bottom corner.
Villarreal confirmed the victory with 10 minutes to play as substitute Mui Gomez collected Cheryshev's cross and powered a finish beyond the helpless Sociedad keeper.
Moyes's embarrassment continued as the hosts made it 4-0 just before the end of the game, this time as Gomez was given too much space to shoot, before being helped out by Zubikarai, who let the ball scrape horribly below his body and into the net.
